HRS Budget Presentation
Holy Rosary School Commission will present an overview of the HRS 2015-16 budget on March 11 at the School Hall beginning at 7:00 pm.
Cathedral Immersion Service Retreat for 7th Grade
Our 7th graders visited St. James Cathedral on Tuesday, February 10 for a full-day service retreat given by Joe Cotton, director of youth ministry for St. James. They learned about Jesus’ dream to elevate the status and dignity of the poor in our world, and they experienced firsthand the part we play in bringing that about when they served homeless guests dinner at St. James Cathedral Kitchen. The highlight of the day was watching the Kingdom of God in action: homeless men and our HRS students “reclining at table” together. Students and their families donated generously to the St. James Kitchen as part of their Advent Outreach, and they plan to do the same during Lent.
St. Martin de Porres
During Lent, our students are participating in a variety of service outreach and prayer opportunities. The details for our annual Lenten Brown Bag lunch program with St. Martin de Porres can be found below. Please watch your child’s classroom newsletter and website for details about our upcoming Holy Thursday Service Outreach. The six weeks of Lent give us ample time and opportunity for service outreach. Pick and choose the activities that work for your family.
BROWN BAG FRIDAYS FOR ST. MARTIN DE PORRES SHELTER began last Friday. Every year, as part of our Lenten Outreach, Holy Rosary School has provided lunches to the men at St. Martin de Porres shelter. Students are asked to bring a lunch or two and a toiletry item on designated Fridays during Lent. These lunches can be kept cold, so perishable food is fine.
**If you are interested in driving a few students to deliver the lunches one Friday in Lent, please contact Jennifer Hazzard in the school office.
Please keep the toiletry items separate from the lunches:
- March 6 – men’s socks
- March 13 – disposable razors/shaving cream (sample size)
- March 20 – (No school due to Archdiocesan In-Service Day)
- March 27 – travel size toothpaste and disposable toothbrush (singles)
Rock Around The Clock on April 25 at 5 pm at Holy Rosary School
Dust off your blue suede shoes and break out your poodle skirt because the Holy Rosary Heart Auction is taking you back in time to the nifty fifties! Brush up on your dance moves, ’cause we’re gonna jump, jive, and twist the night away.
Invitations will go home soon. Start organizing a table to attend the event of the year! Tickets will again cost $75 per person; or $25 for Silent Auction attendance only.
ONLINE AUCTION – Last year we held our first online auction and it was a smashing success, so make sure to participate and be tuned in for our Online Auction this year from April 4 – 18.

- LIVE AUCTION DATA ENTRY – Two people needed. This is not a position that would allow you to “attend” the Auction. However, you would be right in the center of the action. An ideal job for a couple or two friends.
- CO – LEAD CLEAN UP CREW (Sat.) – One parent is needed to support Ben Palmer and his volunteer team on the night of the auction. The clean up team is essential to this event!

The Annual Fund is made up of unrestricted annual gifts from parents, alumni and friends. Donations to the Annual Fund allow us to continue our goal of keeping tuition at a level that allows all parish families to attend the school if they so desire. Annual Fund donations allow us to close the gap between the actual cost of educating each student and what is charged for tuition. Donations also support the school’s operating budget, provide essential resources for educational opportunities for students, financial aid for students, and competitive salaries for teachers.
The Annual Fund is a year-round program, commencing on July 1 and concluding on June 30. Gifts to the Annual Fund can be made by check, online payments or transfer of stock and may be tax deductible as allowable by law.

Celebrate Our Future, Today! – The Centennial Campaign provides the opportunity for everyone (current families, alumni, parish community and others) to contribute toward the success, strength and future of Holy Rosary School by addressing critical capital needs, providing faculty with additional professional development opportunities from which our students will benefit and ensuring future financial aid assistance by growing the Father James Mallahan Endowment Fund.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, we have raised more than $485,000 toward our Campaign goal of $2,000,000. That effort has allowed us to complete installation of the windows this past summer.

Extra Recess Patrols
Thank you 1st grade for covering this week. Calling all 7th grade families to cover our two days in session next week – please use the link below to sign up for the extra recess patrol for next week 2/19-20. These extra patrols are outside the fence. Also, please do not forget to wear an orange safety vest. They are located in the patrol room and help identify you to the children and our HRS neighbors.
THE REFRESH, REBOOT, AND RESET OF CHILDREN’S MINISTRY
Holy Rosary Parish is committed to full family faith formation. We started this school year with Children’s Ministry Brainstorming meetings. Through the past six months we have worked toward implementing programs to meet the needs and goals that were highlighted in the meetings. So far this year we have experienced rapid growth with the transformation of our Mom’s group into a dynamic parish-wide Women’s group (Walking with Purpose); the launching of our Youth Ministry; we have also taken on a new exciting family faith formation approach to 1st Communion Preparation. To better support these and all children’s ministries we have re-organized and added Sister Stella to our parish staff. We are also blessed with the help of a volunteer Christifideles Candidate, Ruth Reiser.
Originally from Dauin, Philippines, Sister Stella holds extensive experience in Child Development, Scripture and Leadership Training, and Accounting. She is currently working toward her Masters and Ph.D. in Transformative Spirituality. She is a Carmelite Sister of Our Lady. A past retreat director, high school religion teacher, and preschool teacher, Sister Stella has over twenty-two years of experience in guiding children and their families. She loves learning about new cultures and visiting her family in the Philippines. She brings her deep faith, bright personality, and dedication to our Children’s Ministry Team.
Sister’s inspiration quote: “I am zealous to the Lord God of Host…offering myself in the life of service in God’s Vineyard.” (based on Elijah in 1 Kings 18:10-23)
Sister Stella’s area of focus will be: Children’s Sunday Faith Formation; Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW); RCIA for Children; and 1st Reconciliation, 1st Communion, and Children’s Confirmation (Profession of Faith).
New to our parish this year, Ruth Reiser and her family have dove into volunteering in several areas of Children’s Ministries. An Archdiocesan sponsored Christifideles Candidate for her Masters Degree in Pastoral Studies through the University of Portland; Ruth has elected to complete her practicum through launching and fostering Holy Rosary’s Youth Ministry program.
Ruth has lived all over the United States due to her father’s military service. She and her family have travelled extensively and were living in Brussels, Belgium before coming back to the United States. She has a son who teaches Latin at Lakeside School and a daughter who is a senior at Notre Dame. Ruth’s husband, who works at Boeing, volunteers in Children’s Ministries as well.
Ruth’s favorite Bible passage: Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the LORD with all your heart, on your own intelligence do not rely; in all your ways be mindful of Him, and He will make straight your paths.

Youth Choir! prepares for Easter: Wednesday, March 11!
Come and sing with us as we get ready for Easter Sunday! YOUTH CHOIR! is for students in grades 3, 4 and 5. We rehearse most Wednesdays after school from 2:30-3:15 in the Parish Center Chapel. Advanced solo practice continues from 3:15-3:40. Fifth grade band students can come to choir when band is done at 2:30! After rehearsal, we also escort kids to BASE. Easter rehearsal dates are on Wednesdays, March 11, 18, 25 and April 1. We sing at the 10:30 mass on Easter Sunday!

JUNIOR HIGH CHOIR schedule: Next mass March 14 @ Saturday 5PM (Please RSVP. Thanks!)
The Junior High Choir had a great start at the end of January: singers from all grades, contemporary music and a praise band to boot! Don’t miss your next chance: Saturday, 5 pm Mass – March 14 – this is a praise and performance opportunity for our teens!
Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 lead the music, and even play some of the instruments! We have many talented singers and musicians, who are joined by our adult band to lead us in joyful and celebratory song at the Saturday Vigil Mass. Students sing together as a choir, and add solos and harmonies as able!
We rehearse one hour before mass, in the chapel, then move to the church to set up. Here’s the performance schedule:
- Saturday, March 14 at 5 pm mass. Rehearse before mass in CHAPEL from 4-4:30.
- Good Friday, April 3 at 7 pm evening service. Rehearse in CHAPEL from 6-6:30.
- Saturday, May 16 at 5pm mass. Rehearse in CHAPEL from 4-4:30.
Students may offer to sing or play an instrument (some competency expected – a great learning experience!). Music will be geared to emphasize the talents and abilities of those involved. After school instrument rehearsals can be arranged.
Parents can assist by:
- Offering to assist in organizing activities (pizza, cookies),
- Set-up before mass, storage after mass,
- Video or audio capture of singing performance.

It’s not too late to register your 6th, 7th, 8th or 9th graders for the Archdiocese of Seattle Youth Rally on March 7th. This is an all-day fun event with over 600+ youth with music, large group games, skits, videos, speakers, etc.

CONGRATULATIONS TO HOLY ROSARY’S ELECT
Edward T., Michael V., Lilly K., Ruben S., Amelia P., and Harper Mae W., were enrolled in the Order of the Elect during the Rite of Election celebrated by Archbishop Sartain at St. James Cathedral, Monday, February 23rd. During the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion, parishes present the catechumens and candidates to the bishop and the congregation. Godparents and sponsors are asked by the bishop to affirm that those in preparation are sufficiently ready to continue their faith journeys, and the catechumens and candidates affirm their desire to fully enter into the life of the Church. The catechumens sign their names into the Book of the Elect, signifying that the catechumens are now members of the Order of the Elect.
The Elect will become fully initiated Catholics, receiving the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil Mass celebrated here at Holy Rosary on April 4th. WS HIGH BASEBALL
The West Seattle High School Baseball Team will be playing a baseball game at Safeco Field on March 28, 2015, 12:30 pm and would like to invite you to attend. DRUG AND ALCOHOL PREVENTION TALK AT SEATTLE PREP
Seattle Prep is hosting an information evening for parents and guardians on the topic of Drug and Alcohol Prevention on Monday, March 30th starting at 6:30 pm.
As the attached letter explains, the program is sponsored by Seattle Children’s Hospital and one of the presenters will be a physician with a specialty in Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine.
