Principal’s Newsletter

Hello! I hope the long weekend was an opportunity to relax a bit, after a busy first week of school. Back to School night was a wonderful school event last week and a great chance to come together as a community.  I enjoyed meeting many of you!

During Tuesday’s weekly announcement to students, I asked students to take a moment and reflect onopeningmass the life and work of St. Teresa of Calcutta, an inspiration to us all. She was, as Pope John Paul II put it, “the true icon of the Good Samaritan.” In this light, I asked our students to consider the importance of their interactions with one another and to reflect on one of my favorite Mother Teresa quotes “Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.” Each day brings us a new opportunity, a new beginning, to make the world a better place. What a tremendous opportunity this is to serve God!

Finally, a bit of business….thank you in advance for returning the home language and income surveys, and media release forms in a timely manner. And thank you to those families who have returned their Annual Fund pledge forms. If you have not, you can make your pledge online easily by clicking on the Annual Fund button on our website. Every bit helps us bridge the gap between tuition and our operating expenses; a gap of $3,000 in grades K-8. Thank you for your continued support!

Have a fantastic week!

Anna

Technology

NEW DEVICES AND APPS – Keeping with our Holy Rosary Technology Plan, we purchased new Chromebooks for the incoming 5th graders and a class set of iPads for the other 2nd grade. This brings our technology to the following ratios:  3:1 iPads in Kindergarten and first grade, 1:1 iPads in grades 2-4, 1:1 Chromebooks in grades 5-8. We continue to have a class set of MacBooks available to classrooms and a class set of iMacs in the computer lab.

Last spring we were awarded a $5,000 grant from the Tulalip Tribe that allowed us to purchase educational iPad apps that targeted instruction in reading and language arts. These apps have been purchased and pushed out to all our iPads in Kindergarten through fourth grade and are currently being used. Fifth grade has also benefitted from some of these apps when using their Chromebooks.

POWERSCHOOL APP – When using the PowerSchool app for iOS and Android, the district code is: KHDH. Details on how to download and use the app and how to use PowerSchool are on the technology page here.

CODING WITH KIDS – Classes will start in October after cross country and soccer have ended. Look for the registration link in the eFC in the coming weeks.

NEW EFC ICON – Notice the new icon for the eFC. This will be used to indicate the eFC has been posted.

Development Directives

MAGAZINE DRIVE – The Magazine Drive kick-off assembly is tomorrow at 2 p.m. Our theme is “SHOW YOUR TRUE COLORS”. Please have your child wear the color assigned to his/her grade.

  • Kindergarten – yellow
  • 1st  grade – blue
  • 2nd grade – red
  • 3rd grade – orange
  • 4th grade – green
  • 5th grade – purple
  • 6th grade – gray
  • 7th grade – pink
  • 8th grade – brown

Tuition does not cover the costs of providing a leading edge, Catholic education. Fundraisers are necessary to help close the gap and give each child room to discover and develop their own unique gifts.

Important Reminders:  Renewals may occur now, and your student receives credit, however the subscription would renew from the current subscription end date. Also every $25 cash donation counts as one subscription. Checks can be dropped off in the front office. Please make out to HRS.

ANNUAL FUND – Thank you to the 95 families and staff that have responded to the ANNUAL FUND. Keep those forms coming. It is very important that we achieve 100% participation; this will open additional opportunities when applying for grants. Don’t forget your matching funds too. 100% participation – it’s for the kids!

West Seattle Christian Church Parking

Parking in the West Seattle Christian Church parking lot for after school pick-up is for preschool families ONLY. Our preschool has an arrangement with West Seattle Christian Church to use their parking lot for drop-off or pick-up purposes (15 minute max). Preschool families have their children in school for 3 hours or less, and often have additional younger children in tow. Please do not use this parking lot if your kids are no longer in the preschool.

Parish

SHOULDER TO SHOULDER gives Holy Rosary parishioners the opportunity to serve each other. Life, at times, has its difficulties. It is important that we not try to face them alone, but rely on one another to help us through. This is the gift of community. St. Paul commended us to bear one another’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2). If one of our Holy Rosary parishioners is ill, grieving, homebound, facing an unexpected crisis or just struggling to get by – we help bear their burden. We want every parish family to sign up so that we can stand with each other, Shoulder to Shoulder. Send your email address to shoulder@holyrosaryseattle.org today, then we’ll tell you when a parishioner needs help and you’ll decide when you want to volunteer.

BAPTISM AND/OR RCIA REGISTRATION – Are you interested in your child becoming Catholic? If your child is newborn up thru age six, please email Deyette at dswegle@holyrosaryseattle.org for more information. If your child is age seven, please email Sr. Stella at srstella@holyrosaryseattle.org.

There’s no registration or cost. If you have any questions, please contact Sr. Stella at 206-937-1488, ext. 251.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CLOW – Do you need general volunteer hours and would like to volunteer while attending Mass? We also need volunteers to help with safety which includes helping the kids cross the street, counting kids, etc. If you are interested, please contact Sr. Stella at 206-937-1488, ext. 251.

We welcome all children at our Holy Rosary Masses but if bringing your child to Mass is causing you stress, please use our Sunday Nursery.  Our Nursery is available for children age 1 and walking up to Kindergarten.  We have two caregivers who are background checked, and have experience in taking care of children.  It is safe and fun for them and gives you a moment to participate in Mass. You can drop off children at the Parish Center, by ringing the doorbell located at the door facing Genesee St.  If you have any questions regarding our Nursery program, please call Deyette at 206-937-1488, ext. 251.
