Stem Activities This Week At Holy Rosary School
KINDERGARTEN – The Kindergarten students faced an engineering challenge on Tuesday. The challenge was to design and build apple containers to hold as many apples as possible. There were specific criteria for the final product. The products were tested as students tried carrying three apples for 10 steps without dropping any. Mrs. Clarke’s class worked in small groups with parent helpers, and Mrs. Crockett’s class worked with 8th grade students.
KINDERGARTEN AND 1ST GRADE ART – This week in Art class, kindergartners and first graders used foil as a medium to explore the difference between two-dimensional and three-dimensional space. Students used foil and pipe cleaners to participate in an engineering challenge. It was a lot of fun!
3RD GRADE – Students learned about the engineering process as they designed and built a tower to hold a small stuffed animal. They only had a small amount of tape and 100 note cards. They focused on communicating their ideas clearly and re-designing when they encountered setbacks.
5TH GRADE – This week fifth graders will discuss the work of aerospace engineers. They will brainstorm how the general features of the planets in our solar system impact the design of spacecraft. Next they will draw and label a fictional spacecraft designed to explore a specific planet in our solar system. Students will share how the features of their fictional spacecraft match its destination and mission goals.
7TH GRADE – The 7th graders, after learning about some basic principles of levers, had a great time in science designing a catapult of their own using the engineering design process.

The 6th Grade music classes need a few volunteers! Students have the opportunity to choose an instrument to learn to play during the school year. There are up to three different groups working at the same time for which supervision is needed. There is no musical talent required to assist – just a desire to help! The benefits? Our terrific kids will share their growing gift of music with you! You will get to hear the end result when the kids come together at the end of class to play as ensemble! Your brain chemistry will delight in the new pathways created by the energy of the kids and the music! And, you will be providing a wonderful service to Holy Rosary School! Volunteers are needed on Tuesday from 2:15-2:45 and Fridays from 10:45-11:15. Many thanks for your kind consideration! Please contact Janet Mudge, Music Specialist, to sign up: firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Annual Fund is a yearly campaign that runs from July 1 – June 30. We have started our 2015-2016 Annual Fund drive and we are at 50% parent participation! . Our ultimate goals are 100% participation and $200,000 by June 2016! Have you pledged yet? Please send your response into the school office. Follow these 3 easy steps:
- Complete the 2015-16 Annual Fund pledge form
- Payment – Either specify the month a check will be sent to school or schedule payments online through this link. Pledges range from $25 to $10,000. No amount is too small!
- Send pledge form into school via email, mail or students’ folders.
- Does your employer match your charitable donation? If so, initiate a matching gift request and notify the development office.
The Annual Fund is vitally important to the school’s ability to meet operating costs and balance the budget. Gifts to the Annual Fund provide unrestricted monies to help fill the gap that tuition alone does not cover. Recognizing that you may not be fully aware of what the Annual Fund is and its importance and impact on our school, read more here and please feel free to contact the development office with ANY Annual Fund/fundraising questions! Kamila Kennedy at email@example.com 206-937-7255.
