Principal’s Newsletter

IMG_1705Hello! And welcome to the 2016-2017 school year. What an amazing start of the school year. Within minutes of the bell on the first day, all of our students were in class and off to a great start; it was a remarkable sight!

Thank you for the warm welcome I have received. I feel so truly blessed to be able to be part of the Holy Rosary community, as both the Principal and as a parent. There is truly no better community around! Spread the word, great things are happening at Holy Rosary School!!

Tonight is our annual Back To School night. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet your children’s teachers and learn about what they will be learning this year. The doors to the gym will open at 6:00 p.m., and the program will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m.  After the program in the gym, you will move to the school, and we will run three, twenty-minute sessions so you will have the opportunity to visit more than one teacher during the Back To School time period (if you have more than one child in the school). Remember, this is a night for parents only. No childcare will be provided.

Students will be bringing home some paperwork with them on Thursday – updated Media Release forms, and family income and home language surveys (one per family). The income and language surveys are something new we are doing this year, as a way for Holy Rosary School to potentially access additional Federal Funds to support our students. These are funds we are entitled to, money that is available because of your hard-earned tax dollars. I am asking for you to help us access these valuable funds by completing the family income and home language surveys by September 9th. Forms can be returned to your student’s classroom teacher and all names will be separated from the forms once returned. The information will be aggregated so your individual information will not be identifiable. Thank you in advance for your support with this.

Again, welcome back and welcome to the many new beginnings this school year holds. If I can be of any assistance, don’t hesitate to ask.

In Christ,

Development Directives

The Development office is striving for 100% participation from all families in our fundraising efforts for this school year. We all know tuition doesn’t cover expenses, so we rely heavily on fundraising and grants to break even. A question we come across repeatedly on grant applications is percentage of parent participation in fundraising/giving. Without being at 100% participation we are jeopardizing some much needed grants.  No amount is too small and will be kept confidential, if desired.

MAGAZINE DRIVE – Please buy, renew and sell magazines. Information can be found on our web site or register your child at, code is ROSARY.

ANNUAL FUND – The Annual Fund form was sent home in the summer mailer. Please complete and return ASAP to the school or complete the online form here or by clicking on the Annual Fund logo on our website. A big thank you to the 70 families who have already responded! 100% participation – it’s for the kids!

West Seattle Christian Church Parking

Parking in the West Seattle Christian Church parking lot for after school pick-up is for preschool families ONLY. Our preschool has an arrangement with West Seattle Christian Church to use their parking lot for drop-off or pick-up purposes (15 minute max). Preschool families have their children in school for 3 hours or less, and often have additional younger children in tow. Please do not use this parking lot if your kids are no longer in the preschool.

Safe Environment

Safe Environment training is required for all school volunteers and educates volunteers on how to keep our school and students safe. The first training is a 3-hour course and background paperwork must be completed by all volunteers prior to volunteering. Every year volunteers must go online to update their status and take a short online refresher course.

Through the Virtus website, volunteers can check their status or submit background checks. Classes will be held at Holy Rosary School on Tuesday, September 6 and Wednesday, September 7, at 6:30 p.m in the School Hall. This class is for volunteers who have not had the initial 3-hour class.

Please see this linked .pdf for information on our grades 5-8 Band program.

It’s time for that great fall tradition – WestFest! Friday, September 16 from 6-10 p.m. and Saturday, September 17 from 10 a.m to 10 p.m. the school and grounds will transform into a fun place for all. Your WestFest committee has been working hard all summer to prepare this wonderful event. We are reaching out to the larger West Seattle community via the local schools, as well as the West Seattle Blog, Facebook, etc. Tell your friends and family and help us welcome our school and parish members, neighbors, friends and families from all over West Seattle!

SPONSORSHIPS – We need your help to make this event a success! We stretch our costs as far as they can go, but we need business sponsorships to bring the event to the community. Sponsorship has a new look and format and your donations will be spread across multiple events (WestFest, Pancake Breakfast, Holy Rosary Golf Tournament) to increase your exposure! If you have, or know of, a business that would like to sponsor WestFest and Holy Rosary School, let us know! Click on “Sponsorship” on the menu bar at the top, or contact Mike Curran at or 206.999.9929.

WRISTBANDS – If you missed purchasing wristbands on the first day of school, there are three other ways to secure wristbands at the pre-sale prices – at the Back to School Night (9/1), Pancake Breakfast (9/11), or simply fill out the wristband order form sent home with your youngest kid and return the form to the school office by 9/15. Wristband prices at the event go up, so take advantage of the savings and get your bands early! We are bringing back the Toddler Time option where kids age 4 and under get exclusive access to three of the rides from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept 17th, for a reduced price. Enjoy the option that best fits your family and come join us!

SHIRTS – Style-up your – and your kids’ – wardrobe with a WestFest t-shirt! There are several styles and colors to choose from (including a new ladies’ style and a new adult baseball jersey style) to spread the WestFest spirit. Holy Rosary students can enjoy free dress with their t-shirt on WestFest spirit day, Friday 9/16. Shirts may be ordered using this order form or purchased from available limited stock on hand at the following upcoming events:  Back to School Night tonight, Parents’ Club Meeting on 9/8, or at the Pancake Breakfast on 9/11.
