HELP WITH FINDING HOUSING? – The new Pastor does not intend to live in the Parish Center. Actually the Archdiocese officially suggests that Pastors not live on site, so this is not unusual. He would like to live in the West Seattle area. It could be a house or an apartment. It could be short term for three months to a year to see if the living situation works ———- or possible long term. The ideal would be a three bedroom situation because priests often turn one of the rooms into a chapel/prayer room. Since I am not that familiar with the area I have no ideas on this. And —- no — I do not know who the new Pastor will be —- as I write this.

roboticsS.T.E.M. (Plus) – A huge Thank You goes out to Michelle DeFeo and Jon Barker who spent Saturday with several of our Robotics Elective students at the Annual Robotics Extravaganza at Seattle Prep. The entire school is getting into the S.T.E.M. swing! I actually should write S.T.E.M. plus because besides Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, we also concentrate on the Arts and Religion. What a school! What a deal!

More than 40 members of the HRS Class of 2011 gathered to share stories from the past and plans for the future. Here are some of the colleges they will attend next year. Parents Club

Please save the date of Thursday, May 14 to attend the Parents Club Volunteer Appreciation. It will be a fun, social event to show how much Holy Rosary appreciates its parent volunteers. We will be thanking all of you who worked so hard during the school year. It is also the final Parents Club meeting for our outgoing 8th grade families. Parents Club will be honoring one of those parents with our annual distinguished service award. There will be more details to come but mark your calendars for Thursday May 14 beginning at 6:30 pm.

School Commission

School Commission is seeking at least two (2) new members for the up-coming school year. These coming years will be very important ones for the school and your kids. A new pastor will join us this summer to lead the community and a new principal search will commence soon after. This is an opportunity to provide a voice for all Holy Rosary parents and to be a leader in your school community. Parents with the following talents will be especially useful for the overall mission of the commission: accounting, facilities, technology and marketing. School Commission is an advisory group that works with the principal and pastor on policy-related issues. Examples of ongoing issues on which the Commission collaborates are the school budget, including fundraising, health and wellness, technology, and the school’s strategic plan. We do not make decisions that affect day-to-day operations of the school. We also do not make decisions regarding academic curricula – that is the responsibility of the principal and his/her staff. The entire committee meets once a month and each member is assigned to one or two subcommittees. You will serve a 4-year term. School Commission members record their hours and meet the requirements for all commitment hours.

The poodle skirts and leather jackets have been safely tucked away, so it’s time to start planning for our NEXT great event – WestFest! I know, September 18th & 19th seem like a long time from now, but WestFest has so much to offer, we are excited to get started right away. This is a FANTASTIC chance to get a jump on those Fundraising hours over the summer, and as the school year kicks off. There are a few leadership roles that need to be filled and we are looking for people that LOVE WestFest as much as our students, parish and our community does, to step right on up! Getting set now ensures a good transition and a TON of support as we plan for WestFest – Carnival of Community – 2015.

The following roles need to be filled:

COMMUNICATIONS & SPONSORSHIP CHAIR – First up, we need a shadow for yours truly, your Communications & Sponsorship Chair! I send out the school & parish & community communication, oversee the design, raffle & sponsorship leads, and am looking to increase our outreach through social media as well. While I have loved being a central part of this committee for 10+ years now, it’s time to pass my keyboard over to the next generation!

SPONSORSHIP LEAD – We need an energetic person who has strong community contacts and outstanding fundraising skills to join the committee as the Sponsorship Lead. This person will work over the summer to secure the support from local businesses to fund WF and its activities. There will be guidance for this position!

LOGISTICS CHAIR – We have a very detailed binder with all the info you need to order the tables & chairs (etc.) – PLUS a detailed layout of where everything goes! You will have a team of folks to set up and tear down – and they are all ready to go. Ideally, this would be an event planner who will be around to assist and answer questions in the days up to, and during the event.

FINANCE CHAIR – We have data from prior years, and are looking for an Excel whiz that can keep all the debits & credits tracked, let the various teams know what their budget is, and so forth. We need someone who can get everything set up & loaded over the summer, then close the books after the event.

BOOK SALE CHAIR – This is a HUGE tie in to the community and parish members—many of whom come just to browse the books! We need someone to build inventory, and take & manage collections over the summer, up to the event. They will also oversee the sale (with volunteer help!) during WestFest.

We are so excited to kick off our planning for WestFest and to have some fresh ideas and fun new folks join the team! If you can see yourself in one of these roles and want to make a contribution to WestFest in this way, please contact Kara Klem at

Talent Show

The theme for this year’s talent show is Holy Rosary Olympics. Each grade has chosen a different country. The students can dress in the traditional or modern clothing from the country. Accessories are also welcomed. If a student doesn’t have any clothing of the country, they can simply wear one of the colors of the flag! We look forward to seeing all of your spirit!

Safe Environment

You may need to renew your Call to Protect training. Click on this link to check your refresher class status. The refresher class is required once a year and is completed online.

Recess Duty 2015-2016

Double your volunteer hours for next year. Now is the perfect opportunity to sign up for next year’s lunch recess duty. The time is 11:15-1:15 daily. Double volunteer hours are given for this enjoyable task. We ask that you choose one specific day per week for the entire year. Please complete this sign up form and return to Ms. Judd by May 26. Thank you.

Extra Recess Patrols

Thank you 5th grade for covering this week. Calling all 6th grade families (it’s your final week!) Please use the link below to sign up for the extra recess patrol for next week 5/18-21. These extra patrols are outside the fence. Also, please do not forget to wear an orange safety vest. They are located in the patrol room and help identify you to the children and our HRS neighbors.


CROSS COUNTRY – Attention HRS Running Gators! I have opened registration for the FALL season of CYO cross-country early! You can now register your child to run in the fall, and not have to worry about it during the chaos of back to school! CYO CO-ED HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE – Do you have a high school aged child who would like to play volleyball with their former Holy Rosary buddies?! Holy Rosary Parish is participating in the 2015 CYO Co-Ed High School Volleyball League. Your high school age student is eligible to play, grades 9-12 only. Matches will be on Sundays, tentatively planned for May 3, 17, 31 and June 7, 14 with an end of season tournament on June 20th, no playoffs. This Co-Ed league is a very relaxed and players are not required to commit to attend every match, but are required to register. Non Holy Rosary players are also welcome, if their parish does not currently have a team. The price of registration is $45.00 and this includes a T-shirt. The price will be $45.00 regardless of how many matches your player is able to attend. Please register at this link – Registration will close on April 30th. Please register ASAP if your child is interested in participating. TRANSITION TEAM NEWS – Members of the Transition Team met with a Transition Team representative from the Archdiocese on April 30. An announcement regarding who will be assigned to Holy Rosary still has not been made. This announcement may come in the next few weeks. We will be planning a Welcoming Event after we are made aware of who has been assigned. FATHER JOHN’S FAREWELL PARTY – Sunday, June 28, after 10.30 am Mass in Lanigan Gym. More information related to Fr. John’s party and a request for volunteers will follow in the weeks ahead.
Farewell Gift: You may contribute towards Fr. John’s farewell gift, which will enrich his upcoming travels, by giving on-line, mailing your contribution to the Parish Office, or placing your contribution in an envelope marked “Gift for Fr. John” and placing it in the collection basket at Mass. When going on-line be sure to indicate “Gift for Fr. John” in the space provided and if donating by check be sure to indicate “Gift for Fr. John” on the memo line of the check. We will accept contributions for the gift through June 15.

HOLY ROSARY PARISH AT THE SEATTLE MARINERS – Holy Rosary Parish has a block of tickets for the Seattle Mariners vs. Astros game on Sunday, June 21 at 1:10pm. June 21 is Father’s Day so this is a perfect family friendly event to attend. Tickets are only $12.00! Don’t wait…tickets are sold on a first come, first serve basis. To the members of Holy Rosary Parish and/or School, the Liturgy Commission is looking for new members for the year 2015-2016. We are seeking people from diverse age groups and backgrounds, hence young adults to the well seasoned. The duties of this commission include advising our Priest on matters regarding the liturgy as well as represent ministries that take part in the Liturgy. Our meetings usually take place on Mondays once a month/early evening. If you have any inquiries or an inclination to join, please contact Patrick Barredo at the Parish office.

ARTSWEST SUMMER PROGRAMS – ArtsWest Playhouse and Gallery conveniently located here in the West Seattle Junction is excited to offer two Musical Theater Academy Summer Programs:

Elementary Musical Theater Academy – Two Sessions: July 6-17 & August 3-14 (10am-4pm). Kindergarten – Grade 5, no audition. These two-week sessions will welcome our youngest students into the world of incredible story-telling through the medium of musical theater. With an emphasis on acting skills, movement, singing and improvisation games, musical theater comes to life as our students take classes with some of Seattle’s best working professionals. In addition to the daily class work, the students will learn performance skills which will culminate in a showcase for family and friends. $400 per session. Email to register at

Middle School Musical Theater Academy – Two Sessions: July 20-31, August 3-14, (10am-4pm). Grade 6 – 8, no audition. These two week sessions will welcome our middle school students into the world of incredible story-telling through the medium of musical theater, and also provide them with a safe place to explore and build self-confidence. With an emphasis on developing their facility as actors, dancers, vocal technicians and improvisers, musical theater exploration leads to teamwork, respect, and a sense of belonging. Students will be mentored by some of Seattle’s best working professionals, many of whom grace the stages of Seattle’s biggest theaters.
