Principal’s Message

Dear Holy Rosary families,

How can it be, that it is almost mid-May! Many wonderful and exciting things are happening right now, especially in preparation for next year!

I wanted to bring a few things to your attention that are interesting and may be relevant to your family.

holyrosarystudentspreparesNTFirst, some of our seventh grade students were recognized for their missionary discipleship last month, in an online NW Catholic publication. Check it out here!

They are one shining example of the wonderful things our students participate in throughout the year.

Second, May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

Mental illnesses are far more common than cancer, diabetes, heart disease or arthritis. Our faith communities can be an important part of the support and recovery process through education, support and by helping individuals and families feel part of a caring community. Please visit the parish webpage for more information about adult learning opportunities this month.

As part of this, I wanted to bring something to your attention. Netflix has recently released a series that seems to be garnering attention from teens and young adults. Many churches are urging parents to familiarize yourself with the series “13 Reasons Why”, based on a young adult novel. Many teenagers are watching this, sometimes one episode after another.

According to information referred to us by the Archdiocese, the series includes mature content on several levels including language and situations that may not be suitable for teen viewing. Although the series is intended to bring to light circumstances and serious content leading to the character’s suicide, it may have an unintended affect of glorifying suicide among teens. I urge you to follow this link from the Catholic News Agency. It provides an overview, along with interpretation by mental health and Catholic professionals.

Overall this is an opportunity for family conversation and to offer guidance, to stress values and remind everyone of God’s love for all His children.

May the peace of Christ be with you this Easter season.

Staff Changes for 2017-18

It is with excitement and some sadness we share with you some staff changes for next year. Lacey Reuter has decided to pursue her private art teaching full time, and will be leaving the position of art teacher. We are sad to see Lacey go, but know she will stay connected to our community. We are happy to share, however, that Autumn Helling will be moving into the art teaching position. Autumn is excited to apply her creative skills to this new position and we know she will continue to bring the joy of art to all of our students. Angela Uding will be moving into the third grade position vacated by Autumn and we have posted for a sixth grade teaching position. More to come!

Holy Rosary Represents At Seattle Prep Robotics Extravaganza

robotics2017Congratulations to Ms. DeFeo and to our Robotics electives students – Payton S., Molly M., Evie B., Lili G., and Jake H. – who attended last Saturday’s Robotics Extravaganza at Seattle Prep. It was a great sharing and learning experience!

Fourth Grade Annual Charity Bake Sale!
The annual fourth grade charity bake sale will take place Wednesday, May 17. All proceeds will go to Catholic Relief Services to help the millions affected by the famine in East Africa. Most items cost between 25 cents and $1.00. Thank you for your support of this worthy cause!
Welcome New Incoming Families!

We have several new families joining our school in various grades from kindergarten through eighth grade. Become an Ambassador Family for the school and share your Holy Rosary knowledge with a new family! This begins in June with an introduction, and counts towards next year’s volunteer hours. Meeting up for ice cream or hosting a playdate during the summer will count towards general volunteer hours.  Start early! We need approximately 40 families for our Ambassador Program, please consider using your volunteer time to welcome new families to our community! More details and sign-up information can be found at this link.

Parent commitment hours submissions are due by Wednesday, May 31. Click here to enter your hours. Hours submitted after May 31 will not count for this school year.  We will be working that following week billing families who have not completed their hours. BLOOD DRIVE – A NEW WAY TO GIVE – MAY 22 – Holy Rosary is partnering with the American Red Cross to hold our first Blood Drive! Giving blood is giving the gift of life, and we want to show that our school and church community’s spirit of love and generosity goes beyond our immediate Holy Rosary family. The blood drive will be open to the West Seattle community, but we hope that you will lead the way. Please consider donating on May 22 between 2 and 7 p.m.

To register and reserve your spot, please visit: and enter sponsor code “HolyRosarySeattle”.  For more information, please contact Amanda Roberts at 425-922-2834.

Upcoming Library Events

Leslie Sumida, from the Seattle Public Library West Seattle Branch, will be at Holy Rosary to share information about the SPL Summer Reading Program on May 24. She will meet with students from grades PreK-5.

The last day to check out library books is May 19. All books are due the next week. Students still needing any resources to complete assignments should return them as soon as possible.

The BOGO Book Fair returns at the end of May. It is a highlight for students and parents alike. When you buy one item you get the second item free. Unfortunately, you must pay for the most expensive item in each pair. There are sad faces when a student wants to purchase a 50-cent pencil and expects the $20 book to be the free item. Additional BOGO information will be included in next week’s eFC.

The Summer Reading Challenge calendar will be included in the report card envelope.

Parents Club

Tonight is our last Parents Club meeting of the year! Please come and celebrate the fantastic year that we have had. We will be announcing and celebrating our Eighth Grade Parent Distinguished Service Award recipient. Social hour starts at 6:30 p.m. and meeting at 7 p.m. Please come and join the celebration.

Recess Duty 2017-2018

Double your volunteer hours for next year. Now is the perfect opportunity to sign up for next year’s lunch recess duty. The time is 11:15-1:15 daily. Double volunteer hours are given to those who complete a full two hours on their assigned day. We ask that you choose one specific day per week for the entire year. Email Jennifer Hazzard ( that you are interested in doing recess duty for next year and indicate the day of the week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday) in which you are interested. Thank you.

Development Directives

ANNUAL FUND – If you made a pledge at the beginning of the school year, and you are not making payments, please fulfill that pledge NOW. If you have NOT had an opportunity to make an annual fund donation, I urge you to help us reach 100% participation in the ANNUAL FUND. No amount is too small.  When applying for grants, a higher percentage of family participation informs the granting committee that we have exhausted our internal resources and increases our chances of obtaining additional funds from outside sources. Currently we are at 71% and I know we can do better! Click here to make a donation.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES – Tired of figuring out how you will get those hours in? We have a few chair positions available:

  • MAGAZINE CO-CHAIRS – This fundraiser nets Holy Rosary 60k annually! You will fulfill all your hours in the fall and not have to worry about it the rest of the year. Our past co-chairs are happy to meet and walk you through the steps this spring. Beth is meeting with the magazine company in May, so please reach out to her if interested. This is a great job for two friends and we are looking for a 2-year commitment.
  • AUCTION FINANCE CHAIR – Track expenses and payments for the auction. You will work closely with the auction software chair to ensure all charges are accurate before sending to the credit card company. Does not require a degree in accounting, but an understanding of numbers is crucial. This position does allow you to attend the auction.

The above positions are crucial to our two largest fundraising events. We NEED people to step-up and fill these positions. Thank you!

Amazing job on GiveBIG participation!  We made just over $14,000, excluding the 5k match, in one day of giving.  We truly are part of an amazing community, thank you to those that participated!
