Principal’s Message

Dear Holy Rosary Families,

As we embark on this first full week of Lent, I wanted to share with you an additional resource that might be a wonderful way to bring prayer into your daily lives at home, from the United States Council of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

On the bottom of this webpage, there is a link to a Week of Prayers for Lenten Devotions from the Department of Justice, Peace, and Human Development. It contains wonderful daily devotions your family can use daily during Lent. We used the Monday devotion as our start of the week prayer this week. I hope this Lenten season affords everyone a chance to slow their pace a bit; I know I am trying to!!

A few other pieces of important information:

Calendar updates- We have mostly finished next year’s calendar, and will put it up on the web in its entirety later in the spring once we have confirmed dates for next year’s auction and a few other events. However, to assist you in planning:

  • First Day of School: 9/5
  • Conferences: 11/20-11/22 (Thanksgiving break 11/23-11/24)
  • Christmas Vacation: Noon Dismissal on 12/19, Return to school 1/2 (which is not a national holiday this year)
  • Mid-Winter Vacation: 2/16-2/20 (2/16 is a staff work day, but no students)
  • Spring Break: 4/2-4/6
  • Last Day of School: 6/15

And finally, Tuesday’s Parent’s Club speaker was wonderful, and shared some good ways to help our children and students deal with all of the challenges of growing up! I’m including her PowerPoint with this message. Without the actual presentation, some pieces might be a bit confusing- so feel free to give me a shout about anything that doesn’t make sense or that you might like to discuss further! ARFF in the presentation refers to Achievement, Respect, Fun, and Freedom- and that we all need each of these to be at our best! Click on the thumbnails to view larger.

School Commission

SEEKING NEW COMMISSION MEMBERS – The School Commission is seeking new members for the upcoming 2017/18 school year. School Commission members advise the principal and pastor on policy-related issues that affect our school; you are the voice of Holy Rosary parents.

We are looking for parents with education, accounting, facilities, technology and marketing skills that will expand the commission’s overall capability. Examples of ongoing projects include school budget, enrollment, commitment hours, Catholic identity, fundraising, technology, and the marketing of Holy Rosary School.

The School Commission meets the first Thursday of the month. Each member is typically assigned one to two subcommittees that meet throughout the school year. Commission members serve a 4-year term and hours conducting School Commission business count towards commitment hours.

Brown Bag Fridays For St. Martin De Porres Men’s Shelter

Every year, as part of our Lenten Outreach, Holy Rosary School has provided lunches to the men at St. Martin de Porres shelter. Students are asked to bring a lunch or two and a toiletry item on designated Fridays during Lent. These lunches can be kept cold, so perishable food is fine. If you are interested in driving a few students to deliver the lunches one Friday in Lent, please contact Jennifer Hazzard in the school office.

Please keep the toiletry items separate from the lunches:

  • March 17 – Men’s gloves
  • March 24 – travel size toothpaste and disposable toothbrush (singles)
  • March 31 – men’s socks
  • April 7 – disposable razors/shaving cream (sample size)

Vision Screen

RAFFLE TICKETS are selling fast. Don’t miss out on a $5000 tuition voucher for one year. Only 100 tuition raffle tickets will be sold. Please return the raffle sheet to the office or pick up a new sheet there. Tickets for church parking will be sold after Mass the weekends of March 18/19 and 25/26. Sweet Charity Dessert Auction

The dessert committee is seeking your donations of a homemade or bakery purchased dessert. Maybe you have a famous family recipe or know someone who does. We are always looking for new, creative desserts! All proceeds from the dessert auction benefit Holy Rosary’s tuition assistance program. You will receive fundraising hours for your efforts (up to four hours)! For questions contact Sarah Mosley (Vincent (3A) and Dominic (1A) Bucci’s mom) by email: or phone 206-849-7977.

If you need ideas we are happy to make suggestions. We hope to receive all submissions ASAP. Dessert delivery will be from 11:00 – 2:00 the day of the auction at Rainier Golf & Country Club.

Westfest Needs You!

FOOD – Westfest is looking for new and tasty food to add to our fantastic lineup of ribs, burgers, pizza, scones, burritos and wings. It’s a great way to be part of this annual community festival and earn fundraising hours. TRACK & FIELD is right around the corner! I wanted to let everyone know the days of the meets as well as practices so that you can plan your spring accordingly. Track is for grades 4-8 only, unlike Cross Country which is grades K-8. Sign up on Bonzi starting Monday, March 6th. Fee is $40.

Note new practice times! Practices will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. at Hiawatha track beginning on Tuesday, April 4th.

Attire:  Shorts, sweats, t-shirts, sweat pants, and RUNNING shoes made for running 🙂

EASTER IS COMING! SING FOR CHILDREN’S YOUTHCHOIR! – Our Holy Rosary children’s YouthChoir! is recruiting Easter Choir singers (grades 3-5) to joyfully lead the singing on Easter Sunday, April 16 at the 10:30 Mass. We have openings for strong, joyful singers. No audition required—just a love for singing and a willingness to serve! Practices are after school on Wednesdays: March 15, 22, 29, April 5, 12 from 2:30-3:20. Cantor practice is optional, from 3:20-3:40. Practice begins after 5th grade band is done, so band members are welcome! We escort kids back to BASE at 3:20, so BASE kids can be included in choir. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR HIGH SCHOOLERS AND ADULTS AT OUR FIRST COMMUNION BANNER SOCIALS – Come help at our First Communion Banner Socials on Tuesday, March 14 in the School Hall. VOLUNTEERS OPPORTUNITIES PARENTS AT OUR FIRST COMMUNION FAMILY LEARNING CLASSES – We are looking for volunteers for our First Communion Family Learning Classes for those children receiving the First Communion this year. SAVE THE DATE FOR THE YOUTH GROUP LENTEN RETREAT/LOCK-IN on Friday, March 24, from 6:00 p.m. to Saturday, March 25, 9:00 a.m. We will enjoy an evening of togetherness in fun and reflection to prepare for Christ at Easter. Then we will have breakfast the next morning and attend Mass at 8:30 a.m.

PARENTS NIGHT OUT – West Seattle High School Junior Class ASB is hosting a Parent’s Night Out.

  • When:  Friday, March 24, 5:30 – 10 p.m.
  • Who:  Kids ages 3 (must be potty trained) – 11years old.

WATTS BASKETBALL CAMP – We are excited to announce we will be holding a Spring Break Camp April 17-21 for grades 3-8 at the Salvation Army White Center location. MS. REUTERS SUMMER ART CAMPS – Ms. Reuter is gearing up to host two spectacular summer art camps next door at Seattle Lutheran. Summer Art Camp #1 will take place from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. each day on June 12th-15th. Summer Art Camp #2 will be held from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. each day on June 19th-22nd. Each camp will include the following projects:  rainbow cookie dough sculpture, 3D plaster birds, mini garden landscapes, inventors’ lab, TP monster apparel design, polymer clay figurines, canvas painting, and UFO crop circles. Cost per camp session is $210. Eligibility:  Students who have completed first grade are eligible for this camp.
