Principal’s Message

Dear Holy Rosary families,

By the time you read this week’s eFC, we will have finished our accreditation site visit. Phew! Thank you all so much for your support and prayers through this process. Although we won’t have a final answer for a bit, the visit went well, we enjoyed learning from the process, and our students were wonderful representatives of our community. We are a blessed school and have much to celebrate.

And speaking of community, I have an “ask” for some help! On Saturday, April 8th, we’re going to be digging out the smaller playground, removing all of the old woodchips. We’ll start around 9, and will hopefully finish within a few hours if we can get enough manpower! Do you still need hours? We’ll give double hours for anyone able to come help with this project. Look for the sign-up genius coming out this week! Bring your wheelbarrows and shovels! Once the playground is emptied, it’ll be closed for two weeks. During this time we’ll build up a new surround, replace the tires with new stepping pods, and have new woodchips blown in. Our hope, if all goes according to schedule, is for the playground to be back open when we return from spring break!

Finally, during the middle of Lent and we move closer towards Easter, I wanted to share with you the Monday prayer we used this week, which would be a lovely prayer to start your days with as a family.

Almighty and Everlasting God,
You have given us Jesus Christ as a model of humility.
He fulfilled Your will by becoming man.
And giving his life on the Cross.
Help us to bear witness to You
By following His example of suffering.
Help us deepen our relationship with Him during this time of Lent.
And make us worthy to share in His resurrection.
We ask this through Christ our Lord,

Sad News

It is with great sadness that we pass along the news of our former Spanish teacher, Carole Myers’ recent death following a very brief illness. She will be remembered fondly by students and teachers here as a kind and gentle member of our school community. Please keep Carole’s family in your prayers.

Buy those RAFFLE TICKETS now! Don’t miss out on a $5,000 tuition voucher. Only 100 tuition raffle tickets will be sold. Please return the raffle sheet to the office or pick up a new sheet there. Tickets for church parking will be sold after Mass this weekend for only $20!

The ONLINE AUCTION was a record breaker. We raised $35,000!!! Let’s keep the momentum going into next weekend. Thank you so much to our awesome school and Parish community. Items that were not picked up during the designated distribution time may be picked up Sunday, April 2 at 10 a.m. in 7B. Buybacks and teacher books will be sent home in late-April/early May.

The auction NEEDS BOXES to move items to Rainier on Friday and Saturday next week. Please bring any large boxes (case of paper size to wardrobe box size) to Beth’s office or place on the stage. The auction committee will need to carry the boxes, so please nothing exceptionally large or odd shaped.

Auction tickets have SOLD OUT! The committee has planned a fantastic evening! Look for auction catalogs to come home today.

Parents Club

JOIN THE 2017/2018 PARENTS CLUB LEADERSHIP TEAM – VICE PRESIDENT – We are already looking ahead to a fantastic 2017/2018 school year. Before you know it, September will be upon us bringing new teachers, new friends, and a fresh start to a new year of memories. Have you considered being a part of the Parents Club leadership team? Get to know new families, learn more about the inner workings of the school and lend your talent to our incredible school by representing our parent community.

EIGHTH GRADE PARENT VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD – Nominations are now open for the Parents Club ‘Volunteer of the Year’ award. This annual honor is given to an 8th grade parent (with no younger children) who has given their time, talent and treasure for the school and our many programs. Know a parent(s) that has consistently shown up for all of our HRS efforts and will be graduating onto high school? If so, please email Joellyn DeRonghe at with your nominee name and tell us why they deserve the recognition. Deadline for submissions is Friday, April 21st. Award will be presented at our last Parents Club meeting on May 11th.

School Commission

SEEKING NEW COMMISSION MEMBERS – The School Commission is seeking new members for the upcoming 2017/18 school year. School Commission members advise the principal and pastor on policy-related issues that affect our school; you are the voice of Holy Rosary parents.

We are looking for parents with education, accounting, facilities, technology and marketing skills that will expand the commission’s overall capability. Examples of ongoing projects include school budget, enrollment, commitment hours, Catholic identity, fundraising, technology, and the marketing of Holy Rosary School.

The School Commission meets the first Thursday of the month. Each member is typically assigned one to two subcommittees that meet throughout the school year. Commission members serve a 4-year term and hours conducting School Commission business count towards commitment hours.

Brown Bag Fridays For St. Martin De Porres Men’s Shelter

Every year, as part of our Lenten Outreach, Holy Rosary School has provided lunches to the men at St. Martin de Porres shelter. Students are asked to bring a lunch or two and a toiletry item on designated Fridays during Lent. These lunches can be kept cold, so perishable food is fine. If you are interested in driving a few students to deliver the lunches one Friday in Lent, please contact Jennifer Hazzard in the school office.

Please keep the toiletry items separate from the lunches:

  • March 24 – travel size toothpaste and disposable toothbrush (singles)
  • March 31 – men’s socks
  • April 7 – disposable razors/shaving cream (sample size)

TRACK & FIELD is right around the corner! I wanted to let everyone know the days of the meets as well as practices so that you can plan your spring accordingly. Track is for grades 4-8 only, unlike Cross Country which is grades K-8. Bonzi sign up is here. Fee is $40.

Note new practice times! Practices will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. at Hiawatha track beginning on Tuesday, April 4th.

Attire:  Shorts, sweats, t-shirts, sweat pants, and RUNNING shoes made for running 🙂


  • Preliminary: Saturday, May 6 at 10:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
  • Relay: Saturday, May 13 at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

LENTEN CLEANING PARTY, SATURDAY, APRIL 1, NO JOKE! – On Saturday, April 1, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. we are asking for volunteers to join in for a general housekeeping of the church sanctuary. Lent is a time to refresh us through penance and a renewed purpose in our faith. So, it’s spring cleaning time at Holy Rosary! A time to clear our hearts and souls as well to clean our house of worship. We will be dusting, vacuuming, and washing windows, throughout the main sanctuary. Most cleaning materials will be provided, however several Shop-Vacs, Sharks, long extension cords, and buckets would be helpful.

HOLY ROSARY YOUTH GROUP LENTEN LOCK-IN:  FRIDAY, MARCH 24. 6 P.M.-11 P.M. – All sixth through eighth graders are invited to our Youth Group Lenten Lock-in on Friday, March 24, from 6-11 p.m. High schoolers can attend as a Youth Leader.

We will start with an Italian dinner in the Parish office basement, followed by fun activities and then adoration in the chapel.

At 8:45 p.m. we will have a prayer and blessing for the eighth graders, who will be taking high school placement tests the next day. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AT OUR FIRST COMMUNION FAMILY LEARNING CLASSES – We are looking for volunteers for our First Communion Family Learning Classes for those children receiving the First Communion this year. MS. REUTER’S ART WORKSHOP – There are still a few spots available in the super fantastic Art Workshop session which will begin April 13th, taught by Ms. Reuter. Note:  This is not a Holy Rosary School program.

MS. REUTERS SUMMER ART CAMPS – Ms. Reuter is gearing up to host two spectacular summer art camps next door at Seattle Lutheran. Summer Art Camp #1 will take place from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. each day on June 12th-15th. Summer Art Camp #2 will be held from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. each day on June 19th-22nd. Each camp will include the following projects:  rainbow cookie dough sculpture, 3D plaster birds, mini garden landscapes, inventors’ lab, TP monster apparel design, polymer clay figurines, canvas painting, and UFO crop circles. Cost per camp session is $210. Eligibility:  Students who have completed first grade are eligible for this camp. WEST SEATTLE MUSIC STUDIO – Liz Kelly of West Seattle Music Studio has been teaching adult and children piano, guitar, and voice instruction for over 20 years. Click for here more information on her music program. There are flyers available in the office, as well.

PARENTS NIGHT OUT – West Seattle High School Junior Class ASB is hosting a Parent’s Night Out.

  • When:  Tomorrow, March 24, 5:30 – 10 p.m.
  • Who:  Kids ages 3 (must be potty trained) – 11 years old
  • Where: Check in at the WSHS foyer at West Seattle High School – 3000 California Ave SW.

What is Parents Night Out? PNO is a child sitting service where WSHS Junior Class ASB will watch your kids, provide food, fun and activities so the parents can enjoy a night out too! Please tell your friends and THANK YOU for your support!
