Principal’s Message

Dear Holy Rosary families,

We had such a wonderful time at the Bingo Bash last Friday night! It was an exciting night of many, many rounds of bingo! I hope your child had fun as well. I would like to acknowledge all of the work that staff put into planning the event, and the time that all staff donated to make the evening a wonderful success.

We have entered Lent. As I have told students, this is a time for us to slow down, a time for us to walk alongside Jesus in the desert as we prepare ourselves for Easter. Sometimes it can be hard to slow down the business of our lives, so I’ll be including prayers and ideas during my eFC messages this Lenten season. To start, I’d like to share a link to the National Catholic Education Association’s Lenten resources. There are many wonderful ideas here, on how you can engage as a family to make this Lent a prayerful time.

Lenten Activities

The six weeks of Lent is a wonderful time and opportunity for us to be of service, as we reach out in solidarity to our community. During Lent, our students will be participating in a variety of service outreach and prayer opportunities. The details for our annual Lenten Brown Bag lunch program with St. Martin de Porres can be found below. Please watch your child’s classroom newsletter and website for details about our upcoming Holy Thursday Service Outreach.

One note – there will be many service opportunities throughout the Lenten season. Please pick the activities that work for your family.

BROWN BAG FRIDAYS FOR ST. MARTIN DE PORRES MEN’S SHELTER – Every year, as part of our Lenten Outreach, Holy Rosary School has provided lunches to the men at St. Martin de Porres shelter. Students are asked to bring a lunch or two and a toiletry item on designated Fridays during Lent. These lunches can be kept cold, so perishable food is fine. Thank you!

* If you are interested in driving a few students to deliver the lunches one Friday in Lent, please contact Jennifer Hazzard in the school office.

* Please keep the toiletry items separate from the lunches:

  • March 3 – disposable razors/shaving cream (sample size)
  • March 10 – No School due to Archdiocesan In-service Day
  • March 17 – men’s gloves
  • March 24 – travel size toothpaste and disposable toothbrush (singles)
  • March 31 – men’s socks
  • April 7 – disposable razors/shaving cream (sample size)

Development Directives

AUCTION – Invitations went home last week, check your child’s backpack or RSVP here. Get your tables of eight organized for this classy evening at Rainier Golf & Country Club.

The AUCTION VOLUNTEER SignUpGenius is live. This is a huge volunteer event. Please sign up by clicking here. More positions have been added and volunteers are needed all during the month of March.

RAFFLE TICKETS – Raffle tickets for church parking will be sold after mass the weekends of March 18/19 and 25/26. Students will need to be in their HRS sweatshirt and sell with a parent. STRIDELINE SOCKS – Strideline socks, with the Holy Rosary School logo, have been approved as uniform compliant. There are two sizes available: Small (fits shoes size M1-5 W3-7) Standard (fits shoe size M6-13 W8-15). Order online here.

School Commission

There will be an open School Commission meeting tonight. The meeting is open to any parent who wishes to attend.

Sweet Charity Dessert Auction

The dessert committee is seeking your donations of a homemade or bakery purchased dessert. Maybe you have a famous family recipe or know someone who does. We are always looking for new, creative desserts! All proceeds from the dessert auction benefit Holy Rosary’s tuition assistance program. You will receive fundraising hours for your efforts (up to four hours)! For questions contact Sarah Mosley (Vincent (3A) and Dominic (1A) Bucci’s mom) by email: auction-dessert@holyrosaryws.org or phone 206-849-7977.

To sign up to donate one or more desserts to the dessert auction, email your name, phone number and what type of dessert you are thinking of donating, to the above email address. If you need ideas we are happy to make suggestions. We hope to receive all submissions ASAP. Dessert delivery will be from 11:00 – 2:00 the day of the auction at Rainier Golf & Country Club.

Westfest Needs You!

FOOD – Westfest is looking for new and tasty food to add to our fantastic lineup of ribs, burgers, pizza, scones, burritos and wings. It’s a great way to be part of this annual community festival and earn fundraising hours. DRONE PILOT WANTED – The Westfest committee is seeking an experienced drone pilot who would be willing to use his/her own drone to get some aerial photos/video of our playground. Qualified students or parents should contact Marianne Wintermute at mmwintermute@gmail.com. Thank you!

Holy Rosary’s Drama Department Presents The Frog Princess!

Mark your calendars for the evenings of March 8th and 9th, and plan on bringing the whole family to enjoy Holy Rosary Drama Department’s debut of The Frog Princess. Come indulge your imagination in an evening filled with fun, humor, whimsical entertainment, and community building!

  • When:  Wednesday, March 8th and Thursday, March 9th at 7:00 p.m.
  • Where:  Holy Rosary School, School Hall Main Entrance
  • Cost:  Donations warmly accepted at the door
  • Delicious treats and refreshments will be available from our concession stand!
CYO

TRACK & FIELD is right around the corner! I wanted to let everyone know the days of the meets as well as practices so that you can plan your spring accordingly. Track is for grades 4-8 only, unlike Cross Country which is grades K-8. Sign up on Bonzi starting Monday, March 6th. Fee is $40.

Practices will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 to 5:30 at Hiawatha track beginning on Tuesday, April 4th.

Attire:  Shorts, sweats, t-shirts, sweat pants, and RUNNING shoes made for running 🙂

  • Preliminary: Saturday, May 6 at 10:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
  • Relay: Saturday, May 13 at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
  • 8th Grade Pentathlon: Sunday, May 14 at 12:30 p.m. (West Seattle Stadium)

PARISH WIDE LENTEN GATHERING – You’re invited to a Parish-wide Lenten Gathering on Sunday, March 5th after both Masses in the School Hall. Struggling with how to bring Lent into your life? Want to have some family time doing some Lenten crafts and activities together? You’re invited to our Lenten Gathering this Sunday, March 5th at Coffee and Donuts after both Masses. VOLUNTEERS OPPORTUNITIES PARENTS AT OUR FIRST COMMUNION FAMILY LEARNING CLASSES – We are looking for volunteers for our First Communion Family Learning Classes for those children receiving the First Communion this year. SAVE THE DATE FOR THE JR. HIGH YOUTH RALLY 2017 on Saturday, March 11 from 8:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. For all students in our Parish in grades 6-9, join us for a day of fun, faith, music, games, speakers and more. SAVE THE DATE FOR THE YOUTH GROUP LENTEN RETREAT/LOCK-IN on Friday, March 24, from 6:00 p.m. to Saturday, March 25, 9:00 a.m. We will enjoy an evening of togetherness in fun and reflection to prepare for Christ at Easter. Then we will have breakfast the next morning and attend Mass at 8:30 a.m.

THANK YOU FOR SR. STELLA’S CELEBRATION – Thank you to everyone who contributed to Sr. Stella’s celebration this last week and weekend either by writing a note, donating money for her retreat or volunteering your time. Sr. Stella is very appreciative for everyone’s thoughtfulness. A big “Thank you!” to Ms. DeFeo and the seventh grade parents and children who helped Terry Williams and Alice Rose with our Coffee and Donuts after both Masses and helped with our Sr. Stella appreciation. We had a wonderful gathering of our Holy Rosary community.

Community Notices

MS. REUTERS SUMMER ART CAMPS – Ms. Reuter is gearing up to host two spectacular summer art camps next door at Seattle Lutheran. Summer Art Camp #1 will take place from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. each day on June 12th-15th. Summer Art Camp #2 will be held from 9 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. each day on June 19th-22nd. Each camp will include the following projects:  rainbow cookie dough sculpture, 3D plaster birds, mini garden landscapes, inventors’ lab, TP monster apparel design, polymer clay figurines, canvas painting, and UFO crop circles. Cost per camp session is $210. Eligibility:  Students who have completed first grade are eligible for this camp. To reserve a spot for your child, please email lreuter@holyrosaryws.org. Note: This camp is not a Holy Rosary School program.

BATTER UP! West Seattle Little League is still accepting registrations for T-ball, Coach Pitch, and Rookie Divisions!  Registration is open until March 5th.
