Family Communication (eFC) 10-20-2016

Principal’s Message

Hello! Things are busy this week, as we have begun our IOWA-E testing! A few important reminders this week:

1.)  2017-2018 enrollment! If you are a current Holy Rosary family and are planning to enroll a kindergarten student next year, please contact Jennifer Kokkonis (admissions@holyrosaryws.org) or 206-937-7255 to begin the application process. Our new online application will be up and running shortly as well. We want to make sure we give first priority to our current families before opening up enrollment to the public on November 15th. Again, this is primarily for students entering kindergarten next year, but you are welcome to contact Jennifer regarding any new students and this is not for roll-up registration for current students. That will be a separate process.

2.)  An important note from this week’s Parish bulletin:  The leadership of the South Seattle Deanery, comprised of the 17 parishes located in south Seattle has made it a priority to hold listening sessions across the Deanery and among our varied faith communities in order to be present to the wisdom and insights of the People of God. The purpose of these listening sessions is to share with you a draft of the pastoral planning recommendations that are intended to address issues related to our impending priest shortage, lay leadership, parish collaboration, community outreach, partnership with friends and allies, Catholic education, and more. Holy Rosary Parish will host one of these listening sessions today (Thursday, October 20th, from 6:30-8:00 in the School Hall). Every parish in our Deanery will be affected by the proposed changes, so I encourage you to attend and provide your feedback before the plan is submitted to Archbishop Sartain.

Have a wonderful week! Anna

2017/2018 Enrollment News for New Students and Incoming Kindergarteners

We have begun our rolling admissions process and have already sent out acceptance letters to families who have submitted applications. An online application form will be available tomorrow — Friday, October 20th — on our Holy Rosary website. Once accepted, families will have the option to secure their class spot for next school year by completing a registration packet.

2016_openhouse2Please share our Facebook post with your friends about our upcoming Open House on November 5th. First-hand recommendations drive a large portion of our interested families.

  • In yearly IOWA testing, students in grades 3-8 typically rank one to two grades higher than their peers.
  • Non-Catholics are attracted and value our school for the ideals of service, compassion, and social justice interspersed within Holy Rosary’s curriculum.
  • Encourage families to tour our school or visit our Facebook or Instagram site. Families who tour are impressed by the hands-on learning they see, the happiness of our students, and the meetings with our teachers.

Any questions can be directed to admissions@holyrosaryws.org

Conference Sign Up

The Parent/Student/Teacher conferences are November 24, 25, and 26. Please look for an email blast on Wednesday, October 26 to sign up for conferences.

Picture Retake Day Is October 27

Picture retake day is on Thursday, October 27th. Your child/ren may wear free dress if they are retaking their picture, or if they need to have their picture taken because they missed picture day in September. For retakes, there is no charge — students just need to give the original pictures back to the photographers. We’re also looking for two volunteers to help on picture day. Please contact Jennifer if you are able to help. The time commitment is approximately 9:30-1:00. Thank you.

Mother-Son Glow Bowl

What a great night! Big thank you to Mary Ann Fessler and Courtney Africa for organizing another fun bowling night. Both moms and sons came out in their best dressed crazy outfits that included hair paint, glow necklaces, and highlighter tattoos. A shout out to all the volunteers (especially the moms of girls who allowed the boy moms to participate) who helped make the night a huge success.

CYO SKI CLUB – We’re bringing a ski bus — through Mohan Skiing and Boarding — to Holy Rosary School! Thank you to

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

everyone who completed the survey. As a result of your feedback, here are the program details so far:

  • We will leave from Holy Rosary Friday night after school ends (exact time tbd).
  • We will need a minimum of 30 skiers.
  • Kindergarten through fifth grade students must have a chaperone (one parent to three kids maximum). That parent is responsible for their skier, their equipment and dinner.
  • Sixth and seventh grade students can ride the bus without a parent chaperone, but without a designated chaperone, they must take a lesson at the mountain and be able to carry and manage their equipment and dinner.
  • Eighth grade students can ride the bus without a parent chaperone and do not need to take a lesson.

We will have registration and start date information shortly. Also, we do not have a plan for equipment rentals at this point, but more to follow. Thanks!

TIME FOR ALTAR SERVER TRAINING – This training is for both new and continuing altar servers. Boys and girls in grades 5-8 can serve the holy people of God during Mass. When we join in the Mass, we remember Jesus and give thanks and praise for all the good things that God does for us. Altar servers assist the whole church in praying. They carry the crucifix and candles at Mass. They prepare the altar so that bread and wine can become the Body and Blood of Christ!

The priests and the other ministers who help us celebrate the Mass rely on the altar servers so that we can all receive Christ through the Word of God and through the Eucharist. Servers are trained after school or in the evening. Current altar servers receive follow-up training. Older altar servers can become acolytes, or head altar servers, and lead the younger servers at Mass! Pick one of the following times and use this Signup Genius link to choose your session. Note:  after-school sessions start five minutes after the end of school. All training is done in the church.

  • Wednesday, November 9 – 2:20-4:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, November 10 – 3:05-5:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, November 10 – 6:15-8:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday November 16 – 6:15-8:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, November 17 – 3:05-5:00 p.m.

We will do training together — new and old. This helps the new servers learn more quickly. We’ll sign up 20 servers per session and split into two groups of 10 each.
