Family Communication 9/6/18

Dear Holy Rosary Families,

Happy first week of school! What a blessing and a joy to see your wonderful children back at school. The positive, smiling faces we’ve seen this week are incredible!

I hope to see you all at Open House this evening. This is a parent night and attendance is very important. This is the first opportunity to hear from your child’s teacher(s) about the year to come. We will begin in the gym at 6:30 sharp (doors open at 6:00 p.m.), for students in grades K-8.

See you then!

In Christ,

Welcome (back) to school! It was a joy to celebrate our opening of the school year Mass of the Holy Spirit this week with all of the children, asking the Spirit’s blessing on us and our year. As we prepare to reflect on being a peacemaker and what peace is, let us not forget that peace is one of the fruits of the Spirit – that if we want more peace in our lives, we need more of the Spirit, who leads us to Christ and to the Father.  And so we pray:

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.

In Christ,

Fr. Oakland

Thank you for helping keep our campus a safe and clean place for everyone to enjoy.

Important School Forms

Please complete and return the following forms by the first day of school:  1) Field Trip Driver 2) Certificate of Immunization (K & 6 only). Washington State law requires that all schools keep accurate immunization records on all students.

VIRTUS Safe Environment

Safe Environment training is required for all school volunteers. This training educates our volunteers on how to keep our school and students safe. Please note that the VIRTUS platform will not work on phones or tablets. All data entry must be done on a computer.

For parents of new students and any parent who has not done SE training, you will need to login to the VIRTUS site and register by completing a profile, submit a background check, read and ‘sign’ off on education documentation, and attend a Safe Environment Training Foundation Course (“Protecting God’s Children for Adults”) to be able to volunteer at any on-site school event. Click this link to proceed.

Upcoming Foundation course training dates for new registrants at Holy Rosary School on Wednesday, September 12 at 6 p.m.

When attending the course, please make sure to sign in as proof of attendance.

For returning parents who have already completed a registration and compliant requirements, please login to VIRTUS to check your current status. At this time the Archdiocese reports that background checks are good for three years, however, there is a required online refresher course (“Keeping the Promise Alive”). If you are due for a renewal background check, the system should require this when you login. If it is time for an online refresher course, under your ‘Compliance’ tab in the upper left hand corner, the class title will be listed. Click on the title and it will lead you to a second screen, click on the title again, and your course will begin.

Altar Server Training

Boys and girls in grades 5, 6, 7, 8 and high school can serve the holy people of God during Mass. When we join in the Mass, we remember Jesus and give thanks and praise for all the good things that God does for us. Altar servers assist the whole church in praying. They carry the crucifix and candles at Mass. They prepare the altar so that bread and wine can become the Body and Blood of Christ! The priests and the other ministers who help us celebrate the Mass rely on the altar servers so that we can all receive Christ through the Word of God and through the Eucharist.

  • Training Information – Servers are trained after school or in the evening. Current altar servers receive follow-up training. Older altar servers can become acolytes, or head altar servers, and lead the younger servers at Mass!
  • Pick one of the following times. Use the Signup Genius link below to choose your session.

(Note: After school sessions start 5 minutes after the end of school. All training in church.)

  • Wednesday, September 26 – 2:20-4:20 (time moved earlier)
  • Thursday, September 27 – 6:30-8:30pm

Click here to register and choose a session. We will train all altar servers together–new and old. This helps the new servers learn quicker and helps refresh older servers. We’ll sign up 10 servers per session, but can expand if necessary.

School Bells Will Be Ringing!

Brand new! This year, we are forming School Bells, a handbell choir for students in grades 4 through 8. Beginning on September 19, School Bells will meet on Wednesdays from 4-4:30 in the Parish Center Chapel and all students in grades 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 are invited. Students from Holy Rosary and all area schools are welcome!

Note: This program depends on if there is enough interest to make it affordable for all. Cost will be determined based on participation.

Handbells are easy and fun to play and no musical experience is necessary. As a member of School Bells, you’ll learn a new musical skill, and have fun as you add to the assembly’s celebration of the Mass.

Parents are also welcome to participate in our adult group of ringers: Holy Rosary Handbells! HRH is getting ready to begin its fourth season and everyone who has an interest in handbell ringing is invited to come to an introductory, no obligation meeting on Wednesday, September 19, from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

For more information about School Bells or HRH, please contact Paul Dolejsi, or Marleen Land

PARENTS: Volunteer time counts towards your school hours! Help support our YouthChoir! by volunteering your time to assist at practice or Mass. We also welcome your fun ideas or resources (t-shirts, video recording, website, field trips, community performances, pool/karaoke parties, etc.) Contact Paul Dolejsi, director at for more info.

Religious education students are invited to participate, too! Some local schools are getting out earlier now. Even if your student can’t attend weekly Wednesday 2:30 rehearsals, maybe they can make the one Wednesday that they get out early for teacher in-service. They are also invited to the Sunday pre-mass rehearsal at 9:30 on October 1 in the chapel. We’ll go over all the songs, so they can sing at the mass!

Remember that music helps kids become better learners! Choir helps kids become more confident persons! Singing and serving helps them become closer to Christ!
