Family Communication 12/9/21

Dear Holy Rosary Families,
Happy second week of Advent!
We honor Mary during Advent, as Mary is a model for how we should be living during this time.  In a real sense, she is Advent personified, as God prepared her from the very first moment of her life to be the mother of our Savior.
In this school this week, we are learning about two important feast days during Advent:  the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (yesterday) and the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12th.  We continue to learn about Mary’s “yes” to God and are learning how we can model ourselves after Mary, especially as we engage in acts of service during these days.
I hope this time of Advent continues to draw you closer to Mary and to Jesus, as we prepare for His birth at Christmas.
In Christ,

Invitation 1:  Bambinelli Sunday- When you come to Mass this weekend, have your child/ren bring the bambinos from your home nativity scene.  During Mass I will have them hold them up and ask God’s blessing upon these images of Jesus as we prepare to welcome him anew into our homes and hearts.
Invitation 2:  Christmas Mass – Masses will be at 4PM, 6:30PM and 11PM Christmas Eve, and 9AM Christmas morning.  We will have our usual social distanced section for those who choose as at every Sunday Mass, and all seating is based on a first come basis with no reservations.  Come and join us in the celebration of the season, of the gift of salvation come to us, the birth of Christ our Lord.
Invitation 3:  Christmas is kind of a big deal.  So we shouldn’t just celebrate for a single day.  We celebrate for an entire Octave, 8 days, as if it is Christmas itself, so great and wonderful is God come to us, so momentous in history and in our lives.  Even after that, we are called to continue to carry Christ with us, and to follow him wherever he goes.  How will your family continue the Christmastide even after December 25th, making Christ come alive more and more in your home?  What will be new or different, changed by the advent of our King?
December 26th – Feast of the Holy Family – Masses 8:30AM and 10:30AM
January 1st – Mary Mother of God – Vigil Mass December 31st at 5PM, morning Mass New Years Day at 9AM
January 2nd – Epiphany – Masses at 8:30AM and 10:30AM
In Christ,
Fr. Matthew Oakland

Helping Children Manage Conflict
Helping children learn to manage conflict effectively will also help them to experience more fulfilling friendships and enjoy better social experiences, both at school and outside of it. Of course, how well children are able to resolve conflict is directly related to their age, stage of development and life experiences – for example, a young child may not know how to compromise without assistance or have the emotional capacity to empathize with the needs of others. Equipping children of all ages with the strategies shared below will help them become more effective at resolving conflict and being a good friend. Keep Reading

Music Class

Dear Parents,
Music students continue doing body percussion, music and movement, and music theory games. They are also learning music history and are enjoying Classical works such The Carnival of the Animals. Students have been learning about the different elements in music (beat, rhythm, pitch, melody, and harmony). They are learning about lines and spaces, and the different sections of the orchestra. It has been a delight getting to know your children. Their eagerness to learn and to challenge themselves is a joy to behold. I feel blessed to be here. Thank you for this great honor and privilege.

Service Academy & ROTC Informational Forum

My name is Kristin Moore, Director of Enrollment and Marketing for the Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Seattle. We are hosting a free virtual event for our parish and school families interested in learning more about the five United States Service Academies and/or ROTC programming.
We will have Catholic school alumni from each of the Academies and ROTC programs with us to share experiences and wisdom they have learned along the way.
As the mother of a son at the Naval Academy (’24), I remember clearly how daunting the application process was and how important it was to position yourself well. It would have been so amazing to have an opportunity to ask questions and hear all about life in one of these programs. My hope is that this evening is informational and inspiring for the families who join us.
The plan is to have a short program (prayer & welcome) as a whole group, and then participants are invited to join breakout rooms where they will interact with the young men and women who represent the different programs. They will introduce themselves, share their story, and then open the floor for questions.
The date is Tuesday, December 21st from 7-8 pm on ZOOM.
Click HERE to register for the event. Click HERE to see our flier.

Livestream Mass Information

Our school Masses and Liturgies are live streamed so that families and parishioners can participate from home and so students not able to attend in person may participate from within the school building.  It is possible, due to the nature of the livestream, that student images may be present momentarily in the livestream.   The live stream of the Mass ends before students receive Holy Communion.  Questions regarding this, please contact Anna Horton.

It’s Yearbook Order Time! – LAST CHANCE TO ORDER!

This year’s theme is Time Flies, and the yearbook staff will be doing its best to showcase the theme. Yearbook price is $25 for grades preschool through 7, and $30 for grade 8. We are extremely proud of our yearbook program at Holy Rosary. It’s one of the few K-8 school yearbooks designed by 7th and 8th graders, who are skilled in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. CYO Basketball

We are excited to announce that CYO basketball will begin in January* (see below)! Given the guidance from Washington State Department of Health, availability of our facilities and staffing resources, the CYO program will only be available for 6th – 12th graders. Below is the guidance for the 2022 CYO Basketball season:

  • All players/coaches will wear masks during practices and games.
  • In addition to the CYO Athletic Director, each program must have a healthcare coordinator to help teams comply with the health and safety guidance.
  • The healthcare coordinator must attend a CYO online training.
  • The healthcare coordinator must coordinate with all coaches to check the vaccination status of everyone involved:
    • All coaches, refs and volunteer parents MUST be vaccinated – your vaccination card must be on file with the school.
    • All student athletes must share vaccination status and proper documentation must be verified for vaccinated athletes
  • Per DOH guidance, unvaccinated students must be tested twice weekly,
    • Unvaccinated student athletes must complete the test in a lab or testing facility and submit  results each time to the healthcare point person and/or coach
    • Each program must track ongoing testing on a matrix to be sent monthly to CYO Director.
  • Once the healthcare coordinator is trained and all students have shared vaccination status or have a testing protocol in place, then basketball practices may begin.
  • Spectators must wear a mask regardless of vaccination status. They will be seated in “family units” and those groups will be spaced 6 feet apart.
    • Each game must have a designated person assigned to ensure distancing and safety
    • Many gyms may not be able to hold all the fans who wish to support their student athlete.

Game dates: Jan 8/ 9, 15/16, 22/23 and 29/30 ;  Feb 5/6, 12/13
