Dear Holy Rosary Families,
As we move through this third week in Advent, and into this Christmas season, I hope that the peace of Christ fills your homes and that this Christmas time brings with it joy and love. This year, when there is much suffering in our world around us, I think we are in need of the Incarnate Jesus more than ever. I share with you this short reflection on the quiet invitation that is the newborn Christ at Christmas.
We remain beyond grateful for you, our school families, and for all you do each and every day.
You remain in our hearts and our prayers and I do hope this break is filled with much fun and rest.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Next week we celebrate the joyous birth of Jesus Christ into the world, the dawning of our salvation. There is truly nothing sweeter – God with us! If you are in town, we look forward to having you join us for Christmas Mass:
December 24th at 4PM, 6:30PM or 11PM
December 25th at 9AM
We have a distanced seating section on a first come, first served basis, and everyone will be asked to wear a mask – the same practices we have in place for every Sunday. If you are traveling, be sure and contact the church nearest to you and visit www.masstimes.org if you need help finding one.
December 26th is the Feast of the Holy Family. Masses will be at 8:30AM an 10:30AM. As we look forward to the joys of Heaven, we begin here and now – with our family, in God’s presence, with our wider family of faith, each and every Sunday. Family is so important. It is the place where we grow in God’s love and share that love with one another. It is the place where we become better people – we become holy. Sunday Mass is key. So too is family prayer. Even family meals – time together. Maybe even invite your parish priest over – I always enjoy visiting with families. And I’m always up for a game, as well, as its important to have some fun. The house can be a bit crazy sometimes – there is beauty in that, even. But let us be sure that we are always on our way to Heaven, together, putting God first and love of Him and our neighbor.
I hope you have a blessed Christmas as we celebrate Heaven come to us.
Fr. Matthew Oakland
I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas. I wish you many blessings during this Holiday season.
In this week’s Counselor’s Corner, I included more information and strategies for helping manage and deal with conflict. All students are learning how to problem solve solutions when issues arise with friends and family. It is so important to talk about feelings and brainstorm a variety of ways that we could solve future problems. Keep Reading

Counselor Lauren Samson will also provide more wellness tips relevant to supporting your family during these winter months and Advancement Director Beth Martin will update you on our fundraising efforts. Service Academy & ROTC Informational Forum
My name is Kristin Moore, Director of Enrollment and Marketing for the Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Seattle. We are hosting a free virtual event for our parish and school families interested in learning more about the five United States Service Academies and/or ROTC programming.
We will have Catholic school alumni from each of the Academies and ROTC programs with us to share experiences and wisdom they have learned along the way.
As the mother of a son at the Naval Academy (’24), I remember clearly how daunting the application process was and how important it was to position yourself well. It would have been so amazing to have an opportunity to ask questions and hear all about life in one of these programs. My hope is that this evening is informational and inspiring for the families who join us.
The plan is to have a short program (prayer & welcome) as a whole group, and then participants are invited to join breakout rooms where they will interact with the young men and women who represent the different programs. They will introduce themselves, share their story, and then open the floor for questions.
The date is Tuesday, December 21st from 7-8 pm on ZOOM.
Click HERE to register for the event. Click HERE to see our flier.
Livestream Mass Information
Our school Masses and Liturgies are live streamed so that families and parishioners can participate from home and so students not able to attend in person may participate from within the school building. It is possible, due to the nature of the livestream, that student images may be present momentarily in the livestream. The live stream of the Mass ends before students receive Holy Communion. Questions regarding this, please contact Anna Horton.
Email the office and let them know if your child will be absent. Submit their vaccination card to avoid quarantine restrictions, but remember it takes 2 weeks after their final shot to be fully vaccinated. Have a restful Christmas break.
Help During The Holidays!
Lucy M, Leighton W and Annabelle B are doing a book drive for the South Sound Reading Foundation. We are donating new or used children books for kids who can’t get books. To participate in the book drive all you need to do is bring in a new or gently used children’s book and drop it off in the donation boxes by the front office. Please help us raise books for children who can’t get access to books this Christmas!
Used Navy & Gray Sweatshirts
Used navy and heather gray eighth grade sweatshirts needed for this year’s (and future year’s) auction quilt. I’ve got a design plan in mind, but need more navy (could be the gator sweatshirts) and gray (8th grade) shirts to make it happen. If you clean out your closet this Christmas break, please send them into school and I’ll pick them up in the office. Thank you, Denise Davis
Enjoy Some Holiday Cheer & Help Me Help The West Seattle Community!
Hi I’m 8th grader Izzy B and for one of my 8th grade community projects I am hosting a food drive to support the West Seattle food bank. Last year I collected over 700 lbs of food and this year my goal is 1000lbs. While you’re here enjoy our family Holiday light display between 2:30-11pm. Located between Stevens and Lander on 45th (just 2 blocks behind PCC)
January Is National Blood Donor Month
To create awareness and to help ensure an ample blood supply post-holidays for our community, Holy Rosary School is running a two week blood donation campaign with Bloodworks Northwest.
About the campaign: Give blood by visiting any Bloodworks Northwest Donor Center (fixed site) or Pop-up Donor Center (temporary site) that is conveniently located near you between Mon Jan 3 and Mon Jan 17 and upon arrival, check in (register) to give blood under donor code HRS. We ask you to provide this code so the blood center can track our impact! (Or mention to the registrar you are donating on behalf of Holy Rosary School). Help us reach a goal of finding 30 folks to attend over the two-week time frame!
To ensure social distancing, appointments are required. Please search for a blood donation location and make your appointment anywhere from Jan 3 – 17 HERE
If a West Seattle pop-up suits you best, please save your spot HERE.
For help booking an appointment e-mail email@example.com or call 1-800-398-7888. For info on eligibility, donor incentives, the safety of donating blood during the pandemic, please visit www.Bloodworksnw.org
HRS Social Media
Calling all HRS familes! We want to put a spotlight on all the amazing things going on in our community. Did your kid accomplish something awesome? Do you have some cool pictures from extracurricular activities? Updates from HRS alumni? Or anything else fun to share that is HRS related? Volunteer/Parent Vaccination Information
Per Governor Jay Inslee’s directive, all volunteers working in proximity to students must be vaccinated. In accordance with this, please fill out the attached form and include a copy of your Covid-19 vaccination card. If we do not receive a vaccination card from you, you will not be able to participate as a volunteer where students are present. If you have any questions, please contact Kristin Bentler.
On the recommendation of Public Health, and in order to support us in making decisions regarding programming, we are seeking information on the percentage of eligible students (K-8) who are vaccinated. Individual student information will be kept confidential. The aggregate data will help us with programming decisions and mitigation efforts.
Please fill out the attached survey. If we do not receive a response from you, your child will be counted in the category of unvaccinated. Decisions around our programming and activities will be based on the percentages of vaccinated students. If you have any questions, please contact Kristin Bentler.

We are excited to announce that CYO basketball will begin in January* (see below)! Given the guidance from Washington State Department of Health, availability of our facilities and staffing resources, the CYO program will only be available for 6th – 12th graders. Below is the guidance for the 2022 CYO Basketball season:
- All players/coaches will wear masks during practices and games.
- In addition to the CYO Athletic Director, each program must have a healthcare coordinator to help teams comply with the health and safety guidance.
- The healthcare coordinator must attend a CYO online training.
- The healthcare coordinator must coordinate with all coaches to check the vaccination status of everyone involved:
- All coaches, refs and volunteer parents MUST be vaccinated – your vaccination card must be on file with the school.
- All student athletes must share vaccination status and proper documentation must be verified for vaccinated athletes
- Per DOH guidance, unvaccinated students must be tested twice weekly,
- Unvaccinated student athletes must complete the test in a lab or testing facility and submit results each time to the healthcare point person and/or coach
- Each program must track ongoing testing on a matrix to be sent monthly to CYO Director.
- Once the healthcare coordinator is trained and all students have shared vaccination status or have a testing protocol in place, then basketball practices may begin.
- Spectators must wear a mask regardless of vaccination status. They will be seated in “family units” and those groups will be spaced 6 feet apart.
- Each game must have a designated person assigned to ensure distancing and safety
- Many gyms may not be able to hold all the fans who wish to support their student athlete.
Game dates: Jan 8/ 9, 15/16, 22/23 and 29/30 ; Feb 5/6, 12/13
