Family Communication 11/4/21

Dear Holy Rosary Families,
I hope this message finds you well this first week in November.  We enjoyed celebrating All Saints Day this past Monday and prayed for our dearly departed Tuesday on All Souls Day.  These are two important feast days in the Liturgical Calendar of the Church.  Congratulations to our fourth graders who were wonderful, shining examples of the Saints this past Monday!
We are excited to conference with families on November 22nd, 23rd, and 24th.  This will be an important opportunity to celebrate your child(ren)’s progress and successes!  Each family is invited to join teachers for a twenty minute parent-teacher-student conference.  (Note that kindergarten students do not attend conferences).
Monday November 8th at 10:00 am, an email will be sent to all HRS families with a link to set up a conference for your child.  You will have two options to choose from: an in-person conference or a Zoom conference to accommodate different needs, comfort levels, and family situations.  We ask that you choose one option or the other, and if two parents are attending the conference that both parents utilize the same format at the same time (either both on Zoom or both in person at the same time).  If your family is one with two households, we ask that you coordinate a time to conference together as one group so your child can showcase his or her growth this year!
Consistent with the current requirements for schools, we are asking that in-person conferences this fall be limited to parents who are fully vaccinated.  As these conference days are counted as school days, and out of care and concern for the safety of our teachers, staff and the families they go home to, if you have not already done so, please submit your vaccination verification here if you wish to conference in person.
I recognize that we continue to live in challenging and unsettling times, and this pandemic is unfortunately not yet behind us.  Case count declines have plateaued and we remain in a phase of high transmission.  I am confident that we will get to the day soon when we’ll be able to freely open our doors for many in-person events without having to have a conversation about vaccination status.  With more widespread vaccine access, that day is coming soon!
It is very important to me that, though we have to take safety precautions, we also make sure that our school community remains connected and that we partner fully with all families.  Therefore, if you are a family who perhaps is electing not to be vaccinated, and/or if you do not wish to share your vaccination status with the school, and you feel strongly that conferencing in person is best, please contact me directly.  I will work with your family and your child’s teacher to try to find a solution that will work for everyone.
Please know you have our profound thanks for your tremendous support as we continue to navigate this pandemic.
Above all, let us remember that even in unsettling times we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13).
In Christ,

Welcome to the Counselor’s Corner! I will frequently post relevant social-emotional ideas, tips, and strategies. I have enjoyed getting to know your kids through classroom counseling lessons, one-on-one meetings, and small groups. I feel so lucky to be working at Holy Rosary. I would be happy to meet with your child one-on-one to discuss any social-emotional concerns that they are currently experiencing. Please reach out via e-mail Read about “Helping You Child With Anxiety”

Remembering Those Who Have Been Lost To COVID-19

On November 8th at 7:00 pm Archbishop Etienne will celebrate a special Mass of Remembrance of all those who have died from COVID-19.  All are welcome to attend at St. James Cathedral or join via the livestream. More information and the livestream link can be found here.  To submit a name of a loved one lost to be included in the Book of the Dead that will be carried in during the Mass, follow the link here.  Let us also continue to pray for the many members of our school and parish community who have lost loved ones during this pandemic and for the faithful departed.

Livestream Mass Information

Our school Masses and Liturgies are live streamed so that families and parishioners can participate from home and so students not able to attend in person may participate from within the school building.  It is possible, due to the nature of the livestream, that student images may be present momentarily in the livestream.   The live stream of the Mass ends before students receive Holy Communion.  Questions regarding this, please contact Anna Horton.

Safe Environment Training

A background check and Safe Environment training is required to volunteer at any school activities including the Tree Lot.  Right now, it’s taking longer than usual for the courts to process the background checks.  If you have not logged into your Virtus account recently, please do so and verify that you’re up to date.  If you are new and have not established a Virtus account and taken the initial 3 hour class, Holy Rosary School Principal Anna Horton will teach the initial 3 hour class on Friday November 12th at 9:00 am VIA ZOOM.  You can sign up through Virtus. If this timeframe doesn’t work for you, there are a few other Zoom offerings available right now at different parishes/schools and you can see those through your Virtus account as well.  No matter where you attend the course, you must sign up ahead of time in order to receive credit for the class.  Questions- please contact Melissa Tuthill ( or Anna Horton (  Thank you for your assistance with this Archdiocesan requirement.

Scholastic Book Fair

We will be participating in the Online Scholastic Book Fair this year. The dates are November 13th through November 26th. Orders will be shipped directly to your home. The link will be available soon.

Out Of State Travel

If you are planning out of state travel, contact the office. There will still be a quarantine period of 7 days with a Covid test or 10 days without a covid test. If your child is vaccinated and has not been in a high risk area, they do not need to quarantine, but the office will need documented proof of vaccination. If you or your child has traveled in a high risk area or been exposed to high risk situations, please contact the office and we will discuss quarantine restrictions. Non-vaccinated children do not need to quarantine if an immediate family member traveled out of state, unless they were in a high risk area or involved in high risk activity. We are following the Department of Health guidelines for schools at this time. If the guidance changes, we will adjust our rules. If you have any questions, see our Cocvid 19 Info tab on the school site or email Kristin Bentler in the school office.

Update on Volunteer Hours

The School Commission, which oversees the volunteer hours program, decided at its last meeting to temporarily reduce the volunteer hour requirements for this year with the absence of Westfest and reduced opportunities.  We will also work to communicate remote volunteer opportunities as they come available via the eFC.  For this year only, the required hours will be 30, with no required split of fundraising or general hours.  Hours can still be submitted to the appropriate category, but we will not require you to complete 15 hours of each.
Volunteer hours completed last school year (up to 10 hours) can be submitted under the current school year for credit.  Login to your Volunteer Hours account, select August 1st and record your hours.  Multiple entries can be submitted for the last school year (2020/2021) under Aug. 1, 2021  Example: If you did 2 shifts at the Tree Lot, totaling 6 hours, you can select 12am-6am on Aug. 1, 2021, Fundraising Hours, Christmas Tree Lot.  Put in Notes: 2020/2021
The volunteer software will still reflect that 50 hours are due. When you reach 20 hours due, you have completed your commitment.
There are many opportunities to volunteer still ahead of us and we’ll need everyone’s help!  Many shifts will be available at the tree lot, starting Thanksgiving week!  Keep an eye out in the eFC for additional information.

Conferences Are Coming
Mark your calendars for conferences the Monday-Wednesday of Thanksgiving week.  During this week, families will have the opportunity to meet 1:1 with your child’s teacher.  More information on signing up for a time in early November.  As a reminder, students do not follow the regular school schedule this week and are only present for their conference (with the exception of kindergarten where students do not attend).

Food Drive

As we give thanks to God for the many gifts in our lives, we will once again host our November food drive to benefit our local St. Vincent de Paul food pantry.  This local food pantry supports our neighbors here in the West Seattle community most in need.  This year they are most in need of:
Canned Fruit
Canned Vegetables
Canned Chicken
Canned Tuna
Boxed Cereal
Instant Oatmeal Packets (boxed)
Tomato Sauce/Spaghetti Sauce
Peanut Butter (15-16 oz.)
Mac and Cheese
Hearty Soups
Rice/Rice Sides
Our Holy Rosary School community always goes above and beyond supporting our brothers and sisters in the community around us.  Thank you in advance for your generosity!  Food can be dropped off outside of the main office door or sent in with your children to leave on the table in the front hallway of the school.

Volunteer Vaccination Information

Per Governor Jay Inslee’s directive, all volunteers working in proximity to students must be vaccinated. In accordance with this, please fill out the attached form and include a copy of your Covid-19 vaccination card. If we do not receive a vaccination card from you, you will not be able to participate as a volunteer where students are present. If you have any questions, please contact Kristin Bentler.

Student Vaccination Information (6th-8th grade only)

On the recommendation of Public Health, and in order to support us in making decisions regarding programming, we are seeking information on the percentage of eligible students (12 and over) who are vaccinated. Individual student information will be kept confidential. The aggregate data will help us with programming decisions and mitigation efforts.
Please fill out the attached survey. If we do not receive a response from you, your child will be counted in the category of unvaccinated. Decisions around our programming and activities will be based on the percentages of vaccinated students. If you have any questions, please contact Kristin Bentler.
