Family Communication 10/28/21

Dear Holy Rosary Families,
Happy blustery last week in October!
We have much happening around the building these days with November quickly approaching.  Monday is All Saints Day, the special Mass with our fourth grade students. We look forward to this Mass each year!   Thank you also for supporting our school food drive that benefits those most in need in our West Seattle community.  Next week I’ll provide updates on our conference planning and schedule.  The days are busy and fulfilling around here!
Many of you have asked about vaccinations for younger students and if the school will help facilitate these for families who wish to have their 5 – 11 year old children vaccinated.   I wanted to share with you that we learned today that King County Public Health and Holy Family Bilingual School in White Center will host a clinic for local Catholic school students on November 17th (first shot) and December 8th (second shot).  The time will likely be from 12-4 and we may even be assigned a more narrow window for our school to assist with the flow.  I’ll provide more details as I receive them but wanted to get this to you right away for families who are asking and wish to vaccinate at this time.  Parents will need to take their children to be vaccinated, and any absence from school will be excused.
In Christ,

On Monday we will celebrate All Saints Day.  Besides the usual All Hallows Eve celebrations, be sure and celebrate on Monday with your family’s patron saints.  We have name sake patrons, but also those others we have adopted because of a particular vocation, or simply inspiration of their story.  Share some of those stories as we introduce children to heavenly friends.  And if devotion to the saints hasn’t been a part of your life, now is a great time to start!
On Tuesday we will celebrate All Souls Day, as we remember and pray for our loved ones who have passed from this world.  Stop by the Remembrance Family Tree with your children on Sunday, and write down the names of the loved ones, adding it to the tree as we keep these individuals in our prayers throughout the Month of the Dead.  It’s a great way to teach children that we are still connected with them by the love of God, and the love they shared in life.
In Christ,
Fr. Matthew Oakland

Out Of State Travel

If you are planning out of state travel, contact the office. There will still be a quarantine period of 7 days with a Covid test or 10 days without a covid test. If your child is vaccinated and has not been in a high risk area, they do not need to quarantine, but the office will need documented proof of vaccination. If you or your child has traveled in a high risk area or been exposed to high risk situations, please contact the office and we will discuss quarantine restrictions. Non-vaccinated children do not need to quarantine if an immediate family member traveled out of state, unless they were in a high risk area or involved in high risk activity. We are following the Department of Health guidelines for schools at this time. If the guidance changes, we will adjust our rules. If you have any questions, see our Cocvid 19 Info tab on the school site or email Kristin Bentler in the school office.

Parents Club

We had a wonderful and well-attended parents club meeting last week!  For those who were unable to attend, we are sharing the recording of the meeting.  Note – the video link will remain live for two weeks.  Included in the meeting agenda were updates on the start of school and ways we are supporting social emotional learning with our new school counselor Ms. Samson.

Update on Volunteer Hours

The School Commission, which oversees the volunteer hours program, decided at its last meeting to temporarily reduce the volunteer hour requirements for this year with the absence of Westfest and reduced opportunities.  We will also work to communicate remote volunteer opportunities as they come available via the eFC.  For this year only, the required hours will be 30, with no required split of fundraising or general hours.  Hours can still be submitted to the appropriate category, but we will not require you to complete 15 hours of each. The hours clock will remain at 50 hours, just know you are complete when you reach a countdown to 20 remaining.
Volunteer hours completed last school year (up to 10 hours) can be submitted under the current school year for credit.  Login to your Volunteer Hours account, select August 1st and record your hours.  Multiple entries can be submitted for the last school year (2020/2021) under Aug. 1, 2021  Example: If you did 2 shifts at the Tree Lot, totaling 6 hours, you can select 12am-6am on Aug. 1, 2021, Fundraising Hours, Christmas Tree Lot.  Put in Notes: 2020/2021.
There are many opportunities to volunteer still ahead of us and we’ll need everyone’s help!  Many shifts will be available at the tree lot, starting Thanksgiving week!  Keep an eye out in the eFC for additional information.
Questions can be submitted to

Food Drive

As we give thanks to God for the many gifts in our lives, we will once again host our November food drive to benefit our local St. Vincent de Paul food pantry.  This local food pantry supports our neighbors here in the West Seattle community most in need.  This year they are most in need of:
Canned Fruit
Canned Vegetables
Canned Chicken
Canned Tuna
Boxed Cereal
Instant Oatmeal Packets (boxed)
Tomato Sauce/Spaghetti Sauce
Peanut Butter (15-16 oz.)
Mac and Cheese
Hearty Soups
Rice/Rice Sides
Our Holy Rosary School community always goes above and beyond supporting our brothers and sisters in the community around us.  Thank you in advance for your generosity!  Food can be dropped off outside of the main office door or sent in with your children to leave on the table in the front hallway of the school.
