Family Communication 10/21/21

Dear Holy Rosary Families,
We are almost in the last week of October and fall weather is finally upon us.  We nearly lost half of the leaves in front of the school today with the blustery weather!  Thank you for sending your children to school in coats with hoods!
I wanted to let you know that after a bit of training and set-up, we have been approved through the state Learn to Return program to administer diagnostic COVID testing on site for symptomatic staff and students.  This testing is not PCR testing, but rather Antigen testing using BinaxNow kits, said to be 95% effective in detecting COVID-19 in symptomatic individuals.  We will not test anyone without parent permission.  What this means is that we can offer testing on site for individuals coming out of class during the day with any COVID symptoms.  PCR testing is still considered the “gold” standard, and the most accurate, so there will still be times we’ll recommend PCR testing.  But hopefully this will help us add another layer of mitigation to our school day.  If you have any questions about this, feel free to reach out to us.
As we finish October, we continue our prayer journey honoring Mary. Our seventh graders have been leading our school in a decade of the Rosary each Monday morning this month, taking the place of the living Rosary they usually do during this month in the church.  Though we miss the living Rosary, starting our week this way during October together as a school may become a new tradition!
May the peace of Christ be with you these days.
In Christ,

    • October 23rd – Fall Open House
    • November 1st – All Saints Mass
    • November 11th – No School, Veteran’s Day
    • November 22nd-24th – Parent/Student/Teacher Conferences (regular school not in session, BASE open)
    • November 25th-26th – Thanksgiving Break, no school (BASE closed)
    • November 26th – Tree Lot Opens

Out Of State Travel

If you are planning out of state travel, contact the office. There will still be a quarantine period of 7 days with a Covid test or 10 days without a covid test. If your child is vaccinated and has not been in a high risk area, they do not need to quarantine, but the office will need documented proof of vaccination. If you or your child has traveled in a high risk area or been exposed to high risk situations, please contact the office and we will discuss quarantine restrictions. Non-vaccinated children do not need to quarantine if an immediate family member traveled out of state, unless they were in a high risk area or involved in high risk activity. We are following the Department of Health guidelines for schools at this time. If the guidance changes, we will adjust our rules. If you have any questions, see our Cocvid 19 Info tab on the school site or email Kristin Bentler in the school office.

Parents Club

We had a wonderful and well-attended parents club meeting last night!  For those who were unable to attend, we are sharing the recording of the meeting.  Note – the video link will remain live for two weeks.  Included in the meeting agenda were updates on the start of school and ways we are supporting social emotional learning with our new school counselor Ms. Samson.

Hot Lunch Is Back!
Lunch Ladies Catering will provide hot lunch Tuesday through Thursday. If you are interested, please review their ordering information and instructions. **Any meal, ordering or billing questions must be handled through Lunch Ladies Catering** Place all orders by 5pm the previous evening.
Used Uniforms
The Used Uniforms will be out in front of the school on Thursday, October 21st (pending rain).
Update on Volunteer Hours

The School Commission, which oversees the volunteer hours program, decided at its last meeting to temporarily reduce the volunteer hour requirements for this year with the absence of Westfest and reduced opportunities.  We will also work to communicate remote volunteer opportunities as they come available via the eFC.  For this year only, the required hours will be 30, with no required split of fundraising or general hours.  Hours can still be submitted to the appropriate category, but we will not require you to complete 15 hours of each.
Volunteer hours completed last school year (up to 10 hours) can be submitted under the current school year for credit.  Login to your Volunteer Hours account, select August 1st and record your hours.  Multiple entries can be submitted for the last school year (2020/2021) under Aug. 1, 2021  Example: If you did 2 shifts at the Tree Lot, totaling 6 hours, you can select 12am-6am on Aug. 1, 2021, Fundraising Hours, Christmas Tree Lot.  Put in Notes: 2020/2021
There are many opportunities to volunteer still ahead of us and we’ll need everyone’s help!  Many shifts will be available at the tree lot, starting Thanksgiving week!  Keep an eye out in the eFC for additional information.
Questions can be submitted to

Pets On The Playground
Help us keep our playground clean and safe.  After school care uses the playground each day following dismissal.  Please keep pets off of the playground at dismissal.
Conferences Are Coming
Mark your calendars for conferences the Monday-Wednesday of Thanksgiving week.  During this week, families will have the opportunity to meet 1:1 with your child’s teacher.  More information on signing up for a time in early November.  As a reminder, students do not follow the regular school schedule this week and are only present for their conference (with the exception of kindergarten where students do not attend). In order to help us plan for conferences, we request that you complete this very quick survey.

Food Drive

As we give thanks to God for the many gifts in our lives, we will once again host our November food drive to benefit our local St. Vincent de Paul food pantry.  This local food pantry supports our neighbors here in the West Seattle community most in need.  This year they are most in need of:
Canned Fruit
Canned Vegetables
Canned Chicken
Canned Tuna
Boxed Cereal
Instant Oatmeal Packets (boxed)
Tomato Sauce/Spaghetti Sauce
Peanut Butter (15-16 oz.)
Mac and Cheese
Hearty Soups
Rice/Rice Sides
Our Holy Rosary School community always goes above and beyond supporting our brothers and sisters in the community around us.  Thank you in advance for your generosity!  Food can be dropped off outside of the main office door or sent in with your children to leave on the table in the front hallway of the school.
