Family Communication 03/05/20

Dear Holy Rosary Families,

I hope this email finds you well this first full week of Lent.

During this Lenten season we will be making a change to the “Gator Gold” that is part of our PBIS program.  The gold will turn purple and has become “Gator Giving.”  Students will earn Gator Giving tickets for acts of prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and Works of Mercy that support this Lenten time period.  The goal is for us to look for these actions in one another and within our community and to support and love one another as we grow closer to Christ during this Lenten time.  Tickets will be turned into homeroom teachers and we will work as a school, through our collective Gator Giving, to see how many tickets we can earn….or I should say, how many Lenten acts we witness among one another.   The Gator Gold store will return after Easter.

I hope you are enjoying this start to Lent.  If you would like a prayer book to assist you in your Lenten journey, they are available in the school office for pick up.  I hope you will stop by and get one when you are in the school.

In Christ,

Brown Bag Fridays For St. Martin de Porres Men’s Shelter

Every year, as part of our Lenten Outreach, Holy Rosary School has provided lunches to the men at St. Martin de Porres shelter. Students are asked to help pack and bring a lunch along with an additional item on designated Fridays during Lent.

These lunches can be kept cold, so perishable food is fine.

**If you are interested in driving a few students to deliver the lunches one Friday in Lent, please contact Kristin Bentler in the school office.

Please note the collection dates below. It is most helpful if the additional items are kept separate from the lunches.

Fri. March 6 – Lunches + additional Items:

– Last name A-M men’s gloves

– Last name N-Z men’s socks

Fri. March 27 – Lunches only

Fri. April 3 – Lunches + additional Items:

Lake Samish Music Camp

An incredible opportunity for music students to participate in an inclusive, rigorous, and fun summer camp experience.  Our focus is on improving each camper’s skills as a musician and performer in an inspiring environment. Now in its tenth year, LSMC is an overnight camp where students participate in small and large ensembles and have individualized instruction on their primary instrument by highly qualified instructors.  In addition, the camp experience is unmatched in the Northwest with all of the unique adventures that Lake Samish has to offer, including water and nature activities. With an excellent lineup of music staffers, we are excited to welcome students who are ready to learn.  This camp is aimed at students who will be starting their second year of study on their instrument and entering 6th through 12th grade. See our website for more information.

Lenten Mission

Mark your calendars for our Lenten Mission with Fr. Bartholomew Hutcherson, OP on the theme of “Metanoia: Ongoing Conversion”. Fr. Bartholomew is a Dominican Friar and priest of the Province of the Holy Name of Jesus in the Western USA. Ordained in 1997, he has spent most of his priesthood in university and parish ministry. Now, as an Itinerant Preacher, he uses story-telling, teaching, retreats, and pilgrimages to share the Gospel with others. His retreats and missions are rooted deeply in his love for the Word of God and a deeply Catholic understanding of Sacred Scripture. When he is not on the road, Fr. Bartholomew teaches Homiletics at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Berkeley.

  • March 21-22: Fr. Bartholomew will preach all weekend Masses
  • March 23-26: Morning Mission session follows morning Mass, with confessions following the Mission session
  • March 23-26: Evening Mission sessions preceded at 5:30pm with Adoration and confessions; Mission sessions begin at 6:30pm
Opportunities for Adults

We offer several ways to celebrate and grow closer to the risen Christ:

  • Formed – Formed is like Amazon Prime for Catholic content! Find videos, ebooks, audiobooks, and whole study programs at If you don’t have an account yet, click “Sign Up” and then click “I belong to a Parish or Organization”; you can then find Holy Rosary Seattle and register for free. This Lent, we recommend two programs in particular: or
  • Inquiry – Do family or friends ask you about Christianity or your Catholic faith at this time of year? Invite them to Inquiry: an open-ended discussion of life, the universe, and everything from a Catholic point of view! All are welcome and no topic is off limits! This is also the starting point for anyone interested in becoming Catholic. We meet twice a month in the Parish Office, and our next meeting will be Tuesday, March 10. Our topic will be “Why do Catholics give things up?”
  • Bible Study – We’re studying “The Eucharist: Discovering the Mass in the Bible” with Dr. Brant Pitre. There’s still time to join our Bible Study community! For more information and to sign up, please see our website:

Saint of the Week

Every week, we highlight a particular saint. This week, we celebrate St. Frances of Rome. St. Frances lived in the early 1400s, a time of war and strife between the city-states of Italy. As a married woman and manager of a wealthy family, she opened the estate to the sick and poor as a kind of hospital. She lost two children to the black plague, but her grief led her to greater alms and service of others. Her example reminds us that God has given us everything: our skills and talents as well as material possessions; and that we only truly enjoy God’s gifts when we use them to serve those in need. We celebrate her on March 9.

Spring Forward – With Shoulder to Shoulder!

Spring Forward is right around the corner (turning the clocks forward an hour is early morning on March 8)  and Shoulder to Shoulder would like to help with the transition to daylight saving time.  On Saturday, March 7 our team of dedicated volunteers are able to help you (or family members) with:

  • replacing (or even installing) smoke detector batteries
  • replacing lightbulbs
  • resetting clocks
  • general tasks in/around the house/yard

WHAT:                  Spring Forward Fix it Day

WHEN:                  Saturday, March 7, 9AM-3PM

WHY:                     Keeping in touch keeps everyone closer together

SIGN UP:              Contact Shoulder to Shoulder, via email:, or via the Parish Office, 206-935-8353

Interesting in volunteering? We are planning on two sessions for March 7, 9AM to 1200PM  and 1200-300PM, and could use your help for one, or even both, of the sessions.    Is your 7th or 8th grader, or high school student in need of  service hours?  This is a great chance to earn a handful and stay connected to the Gator Congregation (honestly, a group of gators is called a congregation).
